Mat Sah bin Mohd Satray is being held under the Internal Security Act (ISA) since April 18, 2002 on the pretext of terrorism. It is now July 2009.

Mat Sah is currently held in Kamunting Detention Centre, and has been accused of being part of the Jemaah Islamiyyah (JI) network seeking to overthrow the Government of Malaysia by force. The Government to-date has not produced any evidence to substantiate the allegations, and Mat Sahs legal appeals have been rejected in the Malaysian courts. Mat Sah continues to be held without charge. He denies the allegations.

His wife, Norlaila Othman gave an account of the difficulties faced by the family while Mat Sah is being incarcerated. She questions the arbitrariness of detention under the ISA when it is not clear why and how some detainees amassed together were released as others continue to languish in prison.

Is it because Norlaila Othman, and her husband are defiant to the on-going demands of the Government of Malaysia?

R. Vijay Kumar met Norliala Othman recently to find out how she and her son are dealing with their current situaton. There are 3 parts to this video message depicting her testimony.

What was slated as a telecom exchange became a commercial plot and a nine storey building is set to be the new landmark for USJ6, Subang Jaya.

The residents have been opposing the idea of this development right from the start, knowing the congestion it will bring to the already congested Taipan Subang which is just across the road. The disgruntled residents have met with their assemblyperson Hannah Yeoh and the authorities at MPSJ several times to air their grouses.

The residents’ representatives are now meeting up with the Mentri Besar of Selangor on Friday, June 12, 2009 to protest and pursue their endeavour to stop the developer from erecting the building.

July 11, 2009 marked the first 100 days of Datuk Seri Najib’s premiership. Will his 100-day performance serve as an indicator for how our country is likely to be governed for the next four years, or was it all a big public relations exercise?

Whilst the Prime Minister, with his minister, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, is all set to roll-out the National Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) aimed at boosting the performance of Malaysian Civil Service, a group of 10 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) last Friday, July 10, called on the PM to meet a set of 10 KPIs that can deepen the process of democratization, for his next 100 days.

The CSOs hope that the PM will implement the proposed KPIs so as to leave the right legacy for the nation.

The CSOs stressed that only through his commitment to a genuine and holistic reform programme that includes democratization, will our PM be able to earn the full respect and support of all Malaysian.

The CSOs also call upon all Malaysians who are concerned with the establishment of a vibrant democratic system, to join them in endorsing and monitoring the attainment of these KPIs.
