Hailam Kopitiam

Recently, I went to several Hailam Kopitiam in Selangor. I saw all races come together under one roof and eat at the same restaurant like what our ancestors did in the 1940 – 1960.

If you like Chinese halal food, this is the best place c/w reasonable price.

Acknowledged for their culinary skills and specialty dishes, the Goh family, like their peers from Hainan Island, started the Foh Heong Kopitiam in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan. Popular in colonial times, the restaurant was favoured and patronized by the British and also catered for the parties and official functions of the Negeri Royal Family. Together with Tunku Kudin, they set up the Sinaran Restaurant Cafe in 1944.

The transition from colonial times to the present has seen a third generation of Gohs in the business. The Hailam Kopitiam, a concept cafe, serves the original Hainanese tastes and flavours that the Foh Heong Kopitiam is noted for and now serves a new generation of Patrons in Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur. This is especially true of our signature home-made kaya that is undoubtedly the most sought after item on our menu. Their signature recipe, example : Hainan chicken rice, Hainan Mee, black coffee, roasted bread are very delicious.

Consistently though, the cooking style, the unique flavours and distinct tastes that the Foh Heong Kopitiam is noted for has undergone little change. Patrons will be familiar with such authentic items as our specially prepared coffee / tea, home-made kaya with toasted bread (roti bakar) and half-boiled eggs, popular hainanese chicken chop and fish fillet prepared as in colonial times, mee soup, nasi goreng and of course the all time favaurite, hainanese chicken rice.

I really like the food there, Chinese style cooking for all races in Malaysia.

Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore

Resorts World Sentosa is an integrated resort on the island of Sentosa off the southern coast of Singapore. The key attractions include one of Singapore’s two new casinos, a Universal Studios theme park and the world’s largest oceanarium. The S$6.59 billion (US$4.93 billion) integrated resort is developed by our Malaysia’s Genting International, the overseas investment arm of the Genting Group. The resort occupies over 49 hectares (121 acres) of land & employ more than 10,000 people. The total gaming space is 161500 sq ft. This is a new fun place for Malaysian to visit this year. If you do not like gambling, it does not matter as there is plenty of new things to see and enjoy other than the casino. I went inside the casino but I did not play, simply because I just wanted to have a good look at the new casino and have some first hands information about this hottest tourist attraction in Singapore to share with you, not for the purpose of gambling as I am not a gambler.

The soft launch of the first four hotels took place this year on 20 January 2010, with the Festive Walk shopping mall following on February 1. The casino opened on 14 February the first auspicious day of the Chinese New Year.

The resort was designed primarily by American architect Michael Graves. Six hotels offer a total of 1,840 rooms for accommodation. Each hotel is designed with a different theme, catering to both the leisure and business visitors. The resort is split into west, central and east zones.

The casino, capped at 15,000 sq.m. by regulation, is located beneath Crockfords Tower. Government regulations also require Singapore citizens and permanent residents to purchase a S$100 day pass or S$2000 yearly membership for access into the casino. Singaporean patrons can enter/leave the casino freely so long that their levy has not expired. Both types of entry levy – daily or yearly – admits the patron to only one casino. But for us Malaysian, entrance fees is absolutely FREE. The staff will need to check your passport and IC at the entrance for verification. You can get free drink eg: coca-cola, coffee, tea or mineral water as much as you like inside the casino and view free show on stage performed by hot foreign dancers.

The Casino Levy money is collected by the Singapore Totalisator Board controlled by the Government, and is used for public and charity causes. The Casino does not keep any part of the levy money.

Universal Studios Singapore is Southeast Asia’s first Universal Studios theme park. It features 24 attractions. The park is divided into seven zones – including Sci-Fi City, Ancient Egypt, New York, The Lost World, Far Far Away and Hollywood. It’s design is so beautiful.

The resort is served by waterfront station on the Sentosa Express monorail, which connects directly to HarbourFront MRT Station and Vivo City on mainland Singapore.

There will also be a boardwalk linking Sentosa Island to mainland Singapore, which runs approximately 620m and is due for completion by November 2010. Built at a cost of S$70 million (USD$50.1 million) the covered boardwalk will allow visitors to travel to and from the island on the five pairs of travellators. The journey will take approximately 15 minutes.

Waterfront Station is the second station of Sentosa Express monorail. The station was  opened on 1 February 2010.

The food are expensive on Sentosa Island. You can get mee with the price range from S$4.00 to S$8.00. Bring your own mineral water from Malaysia because it will easily cost you S$2.00 per bottle at Sentosa.

Suffering childhood from hell 地狱式痛苦的童年故事

Kong Tai was about 3, when she was first adopted by her biological mother’s younger sister in Kedah. At that time, life was really difficult as inflation rate hit high, jobless rate was high and there was economy crisis that badly affect the lives of many kampong folks. Kong Thai’s father – a traditional closed minded Chinese man decided to give her up as he dislike daughters. Her mother can’t have a say, as in those days, woman especially those without income or education are suppose to submit 100% to her husband without protest, in all circumstances. With tearful eyes, her biological mother said good bye to her. That was her last memory in her childhood life – about motherly love.

After brought her home, her adopted mother changed her name from Wong Kong Tai to Chin Kong Tai. Since then, hell had come to this little girl’s life following with her new name.

From her memory, she remembered very clear that her adopted mother and father did not really care for her. There was one terrifying incident happened at night that she could not forget in her whole life. One night, she can’t control her urine as she drank a lot of milk, so she rushed to the toilet at 3am. When she returned to her bed, she saw many black shadows looked like children who are playing on her bed, which was covered with green mosquitoes net. She felt so scared and screaming & running to her adopted parents’ room, crying and repeatedly banging the door asking for help. But there was no response from them. She keep screaming and crying but her adopted parents refused to open the door. Finally, she felt too weak and fall asleep on the door step until the next morning. Can you imagine what kind of terrible mental and spiritual torment this child had undergone? It was actually not from the ghosts, but from her adopted parents’ cold blood attitude of ignorance, irresponsible and selfishness.

When she turned 7, her adopted mother start to show her true color, by forcing her to carry out all kinds of heavy house work which evens an adult cannot do it alone. She forced to carry heavy loads, washing floor by using the broom which is taller than her little body, forcing to brush all surface shinny clean to avoid heavy punishment. There was one rainy day; the rain was so heavy, she felt very cold so she refused to wash the outdoor flooring under the rain. Her adopted mother decided to teach her a lesson by pressing her head to lock inside the space in between the door and the cement floor. She screamed and begging for mercy, but her mother turned her deaf ears on her. Her mother not just hurting her head, her little weak body but she was badly damaging this little girl’s soul and spirit. Since then, her feeling towards her mum and dad is no longer love, but hell fear and anger.

When she turns 8, her mum start to born many siblings, she had the duty to take care of all the siblings while her parents were away to work. At the same time, she needed to carry out house work, cooking, washing, and cleaning work. There was one incident, where her adopted brother had done for her. At that time, she was baby sitting her younger siblings, suddenly one of her brother cried. Her elder adopted brother mistaken as if she had beaten up the younger brother, he was so furious that he kick boxing this little girl and due to the kick was so hard, her body was blowing  few feet away, landed hard on the floor and she was fainted. Her cousin brother saw it and quickly rescues her by carried her away and locked inside the room. Due to the injury, she was laid down on the bed for days. She cried days and nights, there was no one to complaint to or helped….

She did go to school, and had a lot of fun & happiness at school – singing and playing with other children. Unfortunately, her happy school life was not lasting. At the age of 9, her mum stops her from going to school due to a near miss accident. A lorry driver almost hit her while she was on the way to school walking alone. The lorry driver came to her house and scolded her parents for irresponsible for the child’s safety, which eventually lead to her tragic fate – stop going to school. Her adopted mother finally decided to rope her from the only good thing that ever happen in her life that she enjoyed most – reading, writing, singing and have fun. Life is really unfair for her…

Few years later, she started to work by learning rubber tapping & eventually became a rubber tapper. She saved all her hard earned money , gave some to her mum and keeping some buying gold spare for rainy days. Very soon, she grew up to be a pretty fair lady with fair skin, black hair and strong body. God has grace on her, naturally she was born with a stunning body shape that all women felt jealous and all men love to see her. Many villagers start to propose to her but all were rejected by her mother. Finally, at the age of 21, she was married to a mechanic recommended by her mother and auntie, whom she had merely spoken to, at some pre-arranged ice breaking sessions.

Yes, her mother finally get ride of her by marrying her far away – another state. But her life became worst as she need to work, be a mother, a wife, a daughter in law and born many babies – 12. Some babies die due to sickness and accident. Thanks God, she became an extra ordinary good loving mother after went through hell in her own childhood. She decided to love her kids more than her self; she was willing to sacrifice everything and anything to give the kids good lives, better education and made them happier children. She hardly punished kids with hands or stick, but pour lots of love into their lives, care for them and helped them. She became an extra ordinary good & hard working mother, good grandma and finally died peacefully at the age of 68 due to cancer. She is no longer on earth, but her kindness, her love and her extra ordinary life story continue to live on for generations…

(This is a true story recorded from late Madam Chin Kong Tai)

Fraser’s Hill in Malaysia today

Fraser’s Hill in Malaysia, is named after Louis James Fraser, a Scotsman who struck tin in Malaysia in the 1890s. He employed Chinese miners to do the hard work for him and earning his keep by operating mule trains down the mountain, set up opium and gambling dens to increase his profits, which may have had something to do with his subsequent mysterious disappearance. The tin ran out in 1913 & the lush valley within was rediscovered as a colonial hill resort in 1919. By 1922 a road had been cut through the mountains to the valley, which soon sprouted bungalows, private resorts & eventually turn into a popular highland resort in the state of Pahang.

One of Malaysia’s earliest golf courses was constructed on Fraser’s Hill in 1925. Cool and invigorating throughout the year, Fraser’s Hill remains a popular site with the Malaysians, Singaporeans & Asian tourists for company retreats, camp site and weekend get-aways. It is also known as “Little England” in Malaysia. Fraser’s Hill is famed worldwide as a birdwatching destination, with over 250 species recorded.

Fraser’s Hill is located 105 km north of Kuala Lumpur, around 2 hours by car. For a long time, access to Fraser’s Hill was possible only via a 8 km one-lane road known as The Gap, used by uphill and downhill traffic in turns. A new road was completed in 2001, but it has been plagued by repeated landslides, and is frequently closed for repairs.

When the Gap is the only option: Traffic control effective 7AM to 7PM. Odd hours for going up to Fraser’s Hill and even hours for descending traffic.

I went to Fraser Hill yesterday. The weather at noon was not that cool but you will absolutely feel cold after 6pm. Currently, some constructions work are on-going at the town area. The roads are basically OK but if the roads can be further improve, upgrade and widen, I believe that it will encourage more tourists to visit Fraser Hill. Currently, the narrow winding roads are very scary at time,  especially for inexperience, new drivers or foreigners. For safety reason, you will need to practice extra careful driving skill and precaution when you are driving uphill heading to bungalow or resorts at the hill top. There is no petrol station up in Fraser’s Hill so remember to fill your tank before going uphill.

Construction work is currently going on around clock tower’s area

This building is under renovation – next to clock tower.

It has been more than 2 years for 1.5 million of Klang citizen who are suffering days and nights facing very bad traffic situation in Klang due to the slow work progress of this mega flyover project. Jalan Jambatan Kota, Federal route 2 and 5 is the major highway in Klang, Selangor, Malaysia. It connects Bulatan Simpang Lima until Bulatan 100 in Klang town. Taffic heading into town from the Federal Highway’s bottleneck starts at the Sungai Rasah toll plaza during the peak hours and you will not able to cross the town in less than an hour during after office hours. Almost all the roads leading towards the Federal Highway including Jalan Kapar, Jalan Meru, Jalan Pasar, Jalan Batu Tiga, Jalan Nenas, Jalan Tengku Kelana and Jalan Dato Hamzah are the badly affected routes. The worse situation is near the Metro Plaza, just after Jambatan Musaedin, where traffic from the various directions, including Jalan Kapar, Port Klang and Banting are caught in a bottleneck especially during peak hours. It is a real madness of Klang traffic headache.

The Klang Flyover Bridge project started in 2002 a year before election. No work have been done until 2007 when government is preparing for the GE12 general election. Actual construction began in August 2007 and was plan to be completed by the end of 2009 last year but was further delay to 2010. This projected worth RM32.3mil is being developed by Spaz Sdn Bhd – a housing developer and it is a surprise indeed to know that they are the contractors for this road project.

The bridge is the main road leading to Federal Highway which connect major part of Klang town from north to south. We saw not much progress of the project in 2008.

In 2009, we saw major construction work was going on. Again, Spaz requested for more time to complete until mid of December 2009 as construction work is very much behind schedule. Numerous reason has been cited by the developer such as lack of funds, lack of workers, red tape and also difficulty in obtaining license to close the public roads. Sunway Geotechnics was then taken over the drilling and piling work. The contruction work seems in slow mode and until Dec 2009, the bridge was still unable to complete. It was further delay until late May 2010, finally, the bridge was partially completed and one side of the heavy traffic was allow to flow since May 2010. Well, knowing that this project have tarnish the previous government’s reputation,  the construction signboard which has the logo of ” Satu Lagi Project Kerjasama xxx” eventually was removed. It was a terrible mistake to delay the project for the pass 2 years. The delay had not just made Klang town center almost a ghost town, but also causing numerous hardship, trouble & wasted a lot of precious time for 1.5 million Klang folks which can never be replace or compensate for. Poor traffic dispersal system and also poorly maintained temporary roads are some of the factors contributed to this massive traffic gridlock everyday. The new estimated completion date will be somewhere before end of Dec 2010. The flyover would be estimate to fully opened for motorists from both directions by end of July2010.
