Who are the senior citizens?

谁是老年人?

The actual age used in the definition of senior citizens or elderly has differed among researchers and countries. However, the UN used 60 years and over as the cut-off in deliberating ageing trends. Most of the Malaysian policy makers have adopted this demarcation and is officially used in planning for senior citizens.

在不同国家和研究员,对老年人实际年龄持有不同的定义。 然而,联合国使用60岁来分界和研讨老年人的趋向。

The number of senior citizens in Malaysia almost doubled over the years from 1980 – 2009. The statistic shown that, it is almost about 2.1 million or 7.4% of the populations are categories as senior citizens. The growth rate of elderly population is 4.2% and the growth rate of total population is 2.2%. It is estimate that by the year 2020, Malaysia will have about 4.9 million or 12% of senior citizens.

Although the full impact of an ageing population has not hit Malaysia society yet, the indications of an ageing population are being recognized and much is being done to study and plan for the impending changes. Recently, Penang & Selangor government has done a good job by extending a lot of helps and aids to the elderly people to show the care and love that this group of people desperately need. Government participation has been timely in ensuring that this segment of the population is cared for and their potential utilized in the coming years. The demand for care and services for the elderly must b clearly being recognized and effective implementation of policies become crucial.

Malaysia’s multi-ethnic population composition displays different demographic characteristics among the Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan and so on. According to the study, the Chinese have the highest proportion of senior citizens at 8.8%. The prevalence of low mortality rates, high life expectancy & low fertility have been characteristic of the Chinese population over a longer period compare to Malay, Indian and other races. In fact, all other races are below the 6% level which is considered the benchmark of an ageing population. The Malay, Indian and other indigenous groups have increased at a slower rate and constitute about 6% of their respective groups in year 2008.

The projected senior citizen population for the year 2020, reveals that the low fertility levels experienced among Chinese and Indian in Malaysia, will significantly impact the age structure and result in a doubling in proportion of the elderly within these 2 ethic groups over the next 20 years. The Malay & other indigenous groups’ senior citizen, on the other hand, are projected to increase at comparatively slower rates from 6% in 2008 to 8% in 2020. Higher fertility levels among the Malay & other indigenous groups are likely to contribute to this trend, as a larger are of the younger population is prevalent for this community.

Family structure of Malaysian society is fast changing as a result of modernization and urbanization of the population. It has been recognized that changing traditional roles of women, better educational & career opportunities for women, delayed age at marriage & smaller family size are characteristics that have contributed to the social implications on ageing.

Widowhood is high for the elderly people since higher levels of marital dissolution takes place with the death of either spouse among older couples. According to the analysis, widowed male elderly constituted about 11% of male senior citizens and female widowed who constituted closed to 46% of the female elderly. Females experience longer life expectancy, resulting in significantly larger numbers of widowed females. While among old males, 73% were married and 23% were widowed, a completely reverse pattern was observed for females, with 27% married and 68% widowed.

Most of the elderly people either received no education or very low level of education due to war or financial problem when they were young. According to the study, 51% of the senior citizens had received no schooling at all, 37% had received primary level education, 10% had received secondary level and 2% had received university or college education. This indicates that less than 20% of them are actually able to use computer, internet or iphone to communicate or for entertainment purpose.

Recently in Klang, Grace Assembly Klang Church has taken the good initiative to setup a new club – Senior Citizens fellowship Center to provide a sports and activities center for the elderly people to have fun, have fellowship with their peers, make new friends, play games, work out their body, sing karaoke and cook some simple meals. The elderly people need to be care for, especially for the widows who feel very lonely and neglected by the society. It is good for the NGO, churches, religious body and government to encourage greater independence of future senior citizens, as well as provide opportunities for their involvement in the volunteer work and social development, to prepare for the well-being, as well as optimizing the potential of senior citizens in the country.

Stories About My Indonesian Maids 印尼女佣的故事

I would like to share with you about my practical experience living with my Indonesian maids for the pass 10 years.

我想和你分享我的印尼女佣的生活故事.

When my kids were very young, I used to send all of them to my Indian baby sitter’s house. Sometime, they stayed there for 24 hours. My kids used to follow my Indian baby sitter wherever she went, I gave them freedom and permission to do so. Hence, my kids enjoy their childhood very much as they had chances to attend all kind of festival celebration with their Indian Ah Pa and Ah Ma and they were have the advantage of learning and understanding simple Tamil language and Indian culture.

I start to employ Indonesian maid to care for my kids when they were about 6 years old as I thought that at this age, they will be able to  report to me if the maid had done anything wrong. They were so attached to our maid and very much improved in their BM conversation as it is the only language that the maid can speak.

My 1st Indonesian maid was very young – 17. The record shown that she is 21 but when she came, she just look like a typical teenager. According to the agency, this age discrepancy issue is very common as they are trying hard to get in here by all means, inclusive of giving false personal information to fulfill the official requirement. I did not regret choosing a too young maid as I think she will be able to get along with my kids well and be their friend. True enough, she done her duties perfectly well and be able to get along with my kids without much problem. I treated her like one of my own daughter and buy for her everything she needs and wants. We brought her everywhere we go, visited many wonderful places in Malaysia. She was a happy girl, she like to laugh and talk. She kept our house tidy and neat, loving our kids like one of her own brother and sister. After working for 2 years, the only mistake that she had ever made throughout her whole service term was – she had befriended with an Indonesian lorry driver. I discovered it after she had worked for almost 2 years. Due to the fear of the possibility of getting in trouble, I sent her back when she had completed her contracts. She leave happily with the full pay check and promised that she will write to me or call me. But she never did as what she promised. I never hear from her anymore until now.

My second maid was a 30 plus married woman. Having a married maid has the advantage of less worry about her possible relationship with the Indonesian man here and she is able to care for my kids like a real mother. She was only 40 kg when she first came, when she leave she had gain much weight and score 50 kg on the scale. Like my 1st maid, my second maid also has the same cheerful character. She like to talk, jokes and always smile. I allowed her to go with church member to attend church service on every Sunday morning. She liked the church and her friends. We went to different church as she is only able to understand BM. I gave her all my house keys and trust her to take good care of our house without issues. Indeed, she did not failed us. She treat my kids like her own, able to learn Chinese and Malay style cooking fast and cook well. She can memorized all the Chinese herbs medical names and able to speak simple English after she had service for 1 year. I gave her the recipes  in BM and she was able to cook base on the cook books. For us, she was a smart and kind maid. We thanks God for her. After service for 4 years, finally we had to let her go with tear in our eyes as she miss her family very much and wanted to go home. We bought her all that she ever needed and say goodbye. She cried over the phone at the KLIA airport when she called me from the airport public phone. That was the last time that I ever heard her sweet voice. She never write to us or call us as promised. I guess it is difficult to find a phone to make international calls from her village in Indonesia.

My 3rd maid now is a 21 years old single lady. She is not as intelligent as my 2 previous maids, but she has good character, obedience and kind. We treat her like our little sister and teach her to catch up with all the skills & knowledge that she needs in order to carry out her duties safely and correctly. Although she is a slow learner & very forgetful, but yet she is still able to learn and work properly. She cannot speak fluent BM or any other languages that I can understand, but for me, it is not a big problem as long as she is willing to work hard. She keeps our house clean and hardly asks for anything, except clothes & basic necessities. We feel grateful and thanks God for her. We wish that she will be able to work here for a few years and enjoy her life in Malaysia.

I do not understand why some  people have so much of troubles dealing with their maid. For me, they are normal human like us. They have the same feeling like us, aim high and desired a peaceful and good life like us too. The only different is, they are working far from home and they are foreigners. If you sincerely care for them, they will be able to carry out their duties peacefully and able to perform well.  I believe that no maid on earth wish to create problems and commit crimes if they are being care for and having a good boss. We just need to guide them well and give them clear work instructions and they will be able to carry out their duties.

We need to communicate with them regularly to make them feel like home and feel closer to us. Sometime they need to express their views and ideas in life and work. We just need to give them chances to release their tension and frustration too. I used to give my maid pets eg: a dog, a cat or rabbit to make them happy. Some of the maid like to plant flowers and vegetables, some are very creative in arts and music. So just let them do something that they like, so that they will live happier.

At the end of the day, if our maid is a happy maid, she will make us happy too and our home will be a little bit sweeter, brighter and cleaner.

Many people are talking about the Chinese voter’s new trend and reform, which was proven by some of, the by election’s analysis data, eg: Ulu Selangor & SIBU. That is just one of the many aspects of reform happening in Chinese’s society. In real life, Chinese is not just fast in changing their voting trend, life style; they are also fast in catching up everything up-to-date, eg: latest fashion, smart phone, broadband internet, latest education directions and hot courses, latest political thinking, latest import cars, latest movie, music, dance and so on. For your information, According to a census just beyond 2000, I heard that there were approximately 32% ethnic Chinese in Malaysia. This was alarming enough as we were closer to 40% in the earlier days eg: 1940 – 1950. Today, it is reported that according to 2007’s statistic data, Malaysia has 27.5 million people and only 24% or 7 million is ethnic Chinese. Today, it drops to almost 22%. The number continues to reduce. This will slip further to 19% by 2030 that is why a lot of politicians are interested to study about Chinese’s phenomena, social & economy problem as this is really a serious topic that worth to study about.

Recently, I had attended few Chinese wedding, where 60% of the people are wearing black and white, instead of striking red or colorful clothing. It gave an illusion if someone is  attending a sad funeral instead of a happy wedding. Don’t be surprise, this is just the latest fashion trend, new wedding fashion and black sexy dress code. This new fashion trend is very popular in most of the big cities eg: Ipoh, KL, Subang USJ, Penang, Melaka & JB. Sometime even in a small village eg: kampung baru Cina, you can see lots of wedding group photo consist of 70% of the people wearing black and white. Even the elderly parents and relatives age above 60, are all wearing black to attend wedding dinners for their own children and grandchildren. Funny, isn’t it? But, it is widely accepted. So, what else cannot be change?

At Kopitiam, what is the latest hot topic? by-election, GST, sodomy court case, police shooting…and one more, migration or work in oversea countries..

20 years ago, you may think that women above 30 has no hope of getting married to a good husband or having healthy babies. But today, more than 60% of the Chinese women and men above 25 are still single. More than 40% of the Chinese are still single even after 30 or 35. Why? Financial stress, work stress or workaholic, busy chasing after top grade paper qualification eg: diploma, degree, PhD and master, no time to date, lack of suitable social platform to date, cannot find their perfect Mr. Right or Miss Right, free sex mentality, too many sex partners, spoiled by too many choices are some of the root cause contribute to this trend. Young people prefer to stay together without valid marriage certificate, have a stay-in boy friend or girl friend, occasionally date different people to experience different kind of sex and feeling, instead of choosing a permanent life partner at the early age between 21 – 28,  then sign a contract and have many offspring. Some even don’t know why people need to get married? People marry for many reasons, most often including one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, religious & to have legal children. The statistic shown that even for married couple, the divorce rate are getting very high. Some can simply choose to divorce over small family problem, eg: a heated argument,  an unknown romantic sms, huge credit card bills or bad debt, freedom, friendship, children, family member or in law’s gossip and disagreement, football, drug & drinking problem, financial crisis and so on.

30 years ago, did you ever see hundreds of house wives and retired working women dancing on the street, on the stage or in the Taman? no, isn’t it? but today, you can see them dancing every where, eg: on the stage, at the street, in the garden, all dance in one line – called line dancing..not lion dance.. A line dance is choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows , all facing the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time. .this is a good sign and new trend of keeping fit and active. Line dances have accompanied many popular music styles including pop, rock and roll, disco, Salsa and Jazz. They have proven that even grandma, also deserve for a good and perfect body, healthy & glamorous  life style. They are not satisfied just by staying at home doing nothing and waiting to die kind of life style at old age. They want to have fun, stay healthy and active like young people too.

Another issue in Chinese society is young married couple is either having  very few kids or no kids at all.

How are such couples without children or having 1 or 2 children at home different from those where many dependent children are still present?

  • They work longer hours. Some 42% of people in couple-only families or have less than 2 kids work 45 hours per week or more, compared with 32% of the population.
  • Having no children or less children means a less hectic life. Couples with less children or without children living at home are about as busy as others in the community. On a scale ranging from 1 (not at all busy) to 7 (too busy to cope), 64% of people in couple-only or 2 kids families scored 5 or higher. However, they are less likely than couples with 3 or more dependent children (77%) to describe their lives as busy.
  • Couples without children or has less children have more of a night-life than couples with many children. People in couple-only families or has less than 2 children have average levels of participation across a range of leisure activities . They are more likely to dine out at least monthly (60%) than the general population (51%). They have more of a night-life than couples with many dependent children, who are less likely to dine out or go to cinemas, clubs or hotels than the population generally.
  • They do voluntary work. Couples without children or less children are about as likely as other sectors of the population to be involved in various kinds of community groups. Not surprisingly, they are less likely to be involved in volunteer activities connected with schools and educational organizations (10% compared with 17% of the population) and activities for children and youth (3% compared with 10% of the population). However, this lesser involvement appears to be offset by greater levels of involvement in other kinds of groups, including animal welfare groups , NGO, political groups, business groups, religious groups and health groups.
  • They travel. There is evidence in the survey that couples without children or less than 2 children are less tied down than couples with more than 4 dependent children. Couples without children (39%) are more likely to gain a sense of peace and well being from overseas travel than couples with 4 dependent children (28%).

Latest hot dressing code in town

Recently, I went shopping around major towns in Malaysia eg: KL, Sungai Wang, Klang & Penang, where the majority of the shoppers are consist of  young people and tourists. One thing I notice in common is their latest eyes catching dressing code, especially for young girl or women below 50.

The latest popular dressing for these young people are perfect little mini skirt or short tiny hot pants plus a too short or too low cut small little T-shirt. I am sure most of the male shoppers are enjoying this latest fashion very much, but what about a 40 something lady who is also wearing it matching with a pair of five-inch black high heel pumps..

Is this kind of too hot fashion sexy dress code in  Malaysia is good sign? Of course, women have the right to wear clothing of their choice. It is up to each individual to express their point of view. Some of the people blame the global warming factors causing  hot weather &  made the active young people to wear hot hot to stay cool cool…

At Sungai Wang or KL, you will see women wearing hot fashion are passing by the tourists who are wearing the black Hijab, Burqa or Nigab. I think this kind of fashion scenario is not common in most of the middle east countries.

Teens driving without a valid license

Recently there is a hot topic in town about drivers especially teenagers who are driving without a valid license. This is not new, in fact, this scenario has been happening for a long time especially in rural area where public transport system is very poor and schools are located too far away from housing area. This group of people are also include the vehicle operator who has never been issued a driver’s license from JPJ,
the driver currently has his or her driving license temporarily suspended, or the driver has had his or her driving license permanently revoked due to some serious traffic offenses. Teens who drive without a license are usually doing so because they are unable to obtain a license due to the reason that they are under 17 or unable to sustain a license due to some traffic offenses /outstanding summons, yet they continue driving…what is the root cause and why? Can anybody help to solve this problem permanently or at least improve the situation or create some public awareness about safety first and the danger of not having a valid license?

Is driving without license (you left it at home or lost it) an offense? The answer is a big YES. Even if you have a license that is not on you, you are still in trouble.

School going kids and teengers’ stress control and mental health

Education is very important for every student in Malaysia. Academic performance had been the top priority in life for the majority of the kids and teenagers. Most of them has no time for anything else in life except for  schooling, tuition classes and all type of skills learning workshop and classes eg: music, dance, sport and so on. Recently, a survey result show that a lot of students are facing stress issue, some has received too many negative influence causing them to lost the most basic social values and believe in life. This problem also affect their mental health. The most obvious example is the recent case in a Selangor secondary school where a group of teenagers were alleged to commit sex crime inside the class room during recess time and the victim was pregnant. What had actually happen to these teenagers? what went wrong in their mind and how they were influence by the negative sex information? Is it from the illegal sex VCD, Internet pornographic or playboy magazines? What had happen to our very basic family value, moral and good eastern culture? How to teach our children to handle stress and to avoid having violence behavior?

As educational requirements eg: PMR, SPM & STPM get more stringent , students in Malaysia experience considerable school stress. Here are some student stress relief tips and tools that students can use. These tips will help them to enhance their study skills, be more prepare before major exams and minimize their school stress levels to make learning easier, including an explanation of the importance of student stress management, and resources to help you reduce the school stress you experience.

Manage Time Wisely: It’s important to give yourself plenty of time to work on your studies if you want to do well, and you can save yourself a lot of stress if you plan ahead with good time management skills. Setting up a schedule for study, breaking up your studies into smaller chunks are crucial factors to ensure your academic success without intense stress.

Get Organized: Have a system of organization for note-taking, keeping track of assignments or school homework, and other important papers. Being organized can bring you the peace of mind that comes from knowing where everything is, remembering deadlines and test dates, and clearing your mind of some of the mental clutter & negative thoughts that disorganization brings. Keep a calendar, a schedule, and a filing system for your school assignments & tuition work, and you’ll find it prevents a significant amount of stress!

Create a Good Study Environment: Creating a soothing environment can reduce stress and help you learn.  Aromatherapy, for example, is a known stress reliever, and peppermint essential oil is said to wake up your brain, so I recommend burning it as you study. Playing music as you study can also soothe you and help you learn, or just simply turning on your radio or music player to hear some soft and good music while you are studying are good for you.

Know Your Learning Style: Did you know that we don’t all learn in the same way? It’s important to know whether you’re a visual, kinesthetic or auditory learner, as you can tailor your study practices around your particular learning style and make success easier to attain. Use your the best method and style which suite you most in order for you to achieve more in lesser time. This will helps you to learn fast in a more efficient way.

Practice Visualizations: Visualizations is proven stress management techniques. You can also reduce student stress and improve test performance by imagining yourself achieving your goals in PMR, SPM, STPM or school term examinations. Take a few minutes each day and visualize, in detail, what you’d like to happen, whether it’s giving a presentation at school or college without getting nervous, acing an exam, or something else that will support your success. Then work hard, pray to God for blessing and make it happen!

Get Enough Sleep: If you want your performance to be optimum you need to be well-rested. Research shows that those who are sleep-deprived have more trouble learning and remembering, and perform more poorly in many areas. Work your schedule to ensure you get enough sleep everyday, or take power naps after school.

Eat Well. Eating well will ensure your body to get enough of nutrition that helps your brain to be able to remember well and stay focus in your study. If you are eating poor food eg: too oily food, too spicy food, too much of instance noodles and drink too much of coffee, it will cause you always feeling tired , sleepy or sick. Hence, you will not be able to perform well and stay focus. Learn to eat more fresh fruits , vegetables, herbs and fish, which will benefit you in a long run.

Use Stress Management Techniques: Chronic stress can actually impair your ability to learn and remember facts as well, stress management is one of the most important–and most overlooked–school necessities. A regular stress management practice can reduce your overall stress level and help you to be prepared for whatever comes.

Love God and love your self. You must posses positive and right perception about God and your self. Nobody can control your life forever except God and your self. Learn how to love God, love your own life and appreciate the blessing of God in your life. Learn how to accept weakness inside you, accept things that you cannot change eg: accept the fact that you are not that smart, not that pretty or handsome, not born in a rich family and do not have much money will helps you to be a better and happier student. Academic result is not everything in life. It is just part of your study life, so try to learn your best and work smart towards your goals will be a better option.

Communicate. You must get somebody to speak to or share your view and problems. If you really has no one to trust, write down all of your frustration in a blog to release your stress. Do not keep it to your self, or else it will be explode one day and it will hurt your self badly. So, talk. Talk to your teacher, parents, family members, pastor or friends. You are not alone. Speak to God in prayers. I believe that by God’s grace, one of them will be able to extend their helping hands and care for you. Ask, always ask, if you cannot understand any topic in your study just refer to anybody who can help you. Check the internet website for useful information relating to your study or assignment, most of the time it helps and it works.

The World Health Organization defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. So I encourage parents to concern about their children’ mental health beside their physical health, talks to them like a good friends and bring them out once a while for a movie or a nice dinner to make them happier and not so stressful. It is better to have mentally & spiritually healthy children rather than having children who can scored 10 A+ but experience mental illness, aggressive and have no moral value in life.

According to a recent survey, almost 40% of the school going kids and youth owning either a simple mobile phone, smartphone, iphone or BlackBerry phone, broadband or WiMAX internet services at home. More than 70% of the college or University students using an iphone, smartphone, BlackBerry phone or broadband or WiMAX internet access to communicate with their friends and family anytime and any where. This scenario is identical to students in most of the develop countries, example :China, Singapore, India and most of the Asean countries.

Students in this modern age is totally different from their grandmother time where communication is slow, difficult and costly example : snail mail and fixed line phone. Even for a family to own a normal fixed line phone at home is consider a luxury and the symbolic of middle income or above group.

Today,  a family of few members can own more than 10 phones at home – all kinds of phone which is so convenience and easy to use compare to the olden grandmother days.

College and University students in Malaysia like to use  BlackBerry® smartphone for sms, mms, Push Mail, Instant Messaging, BlackBerry® Maps and Social Networking. It is because  BlackBerry smartphone offers total convenience for both research and pleasure. They can use it to search for the information and topic they need for their study and project, chat with MSN, access to sites like Facebook and Myspace to say hello to their friends and relatives.

Teenagers & young adults like to use iphone to communicate with their friends, play games or listen to music. The iPhone is a line of internet- and multimedia-enabled smartphone. It functions as a camera phone(also including sms, mms and visual voice mail), a portable media player(equivalent to a video ipod), and an internet client (with email, web browsing, and WIFI connectivity).

WiMAX is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. This is one of the latest internet access service available in Malaysia that students like to use to browse internet at home.
Students like to compete or compare with each other in the school and at social gathering. It can range from anything eg: fashion, hair style, watches ,hand phone & notebook computer.

So being a modern parents or grandparents for this group of modern kids and youth are no longer easy. Sometime parents need to learn what is actually going on or latest HOT topics from their kids and young adult children at home and join them at internet social networking website to enhance the communication and relationship, example : facebook, twitter or myspace . Students like to join networks organized by their internet friends, school, college or University.
I encourage the parents or adults who do not know internet or latest smart phones technology to learn as much as possible to be an up to date buddy, daddy, mummy or friend to this group of advance, intelligent and active students.
