Joanne Dayang Baru, a 22-year-old Lun Bawang lass from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah was overwhelmed and excited when she swept the only two awards handed out for the “Miss” category in the semi finals of Miss & Mrs Malaysia Petite World 2016 at Atria Shopping Gallery, Petaling Jaya on 24th July.
Joanne took the honours for Best Talent
for her Rumandawi Sumazau line dance, and Best Evening Gown for her stunning yellow Athena Goddess outfit. Athena was the Goddess from ancient Greek Mythology and the wardrobe was designed by local fashion designer Hanafiah Jumat.
“I am feeling motivated and excited, and I am giving my all in preparing for the final,” Joanne told Citizen Journalists Malaysia (CJMY) after accepting both awards.
The 159 cm (5’2”) tall beauty who is studying for her Diploma in Interior Design at Sabah Institute of Art in Kota Kinabalu is now confident of doing well in her bid to
become Miss Malaysia Petite World 2016 in the pageant finals at Wisma Huazhong, Seri Kembangan on 8th Oct. The winner will be representing Malaysia to participate in the USA’s beauty pageant.
Joanne scooped two Gold medals at the Dance World Cup dance competition in 2014 and made it to the Top 10 finalists in the Unduk Ngadau 2016 beauty pageant last May.
In the “Mrs” category, sales manager Ada Shek Wei Ying, 44, with four children aged 11 to 18, won the Best Talent for her powerful vocal performance of a Chinese song “Invincible Wings.” She participated in “My Lovely Mum” contest in 2009 but did not win.
The Best Evening Gown in the “Mrs” category was won by Tryambikay Vengades.
Joanne, Ada Shek and Tryambikay were among the 23 beautiful petite ladies wowing the judges and the audience with their stunning performances despite their small frames during the talent and evening wear rounds of the pageant’s semi finals.
The panel of judges comprised beauty queens and well-known personalities including Miss & Mrs Malaysia Petite World 2016 organiser Madam Lim Siew Cheng, Glitterama Ladies Charity Group founder and president Datin Maylene Yong, international brand builder C.
