Food security: Malaysia’s food import bill at RM13bil

Malaysia spends RM13bil annually on imported food stuff like fish, meat, potatoes, fruits, onions and vegetables.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the amount could be saved if people plant cash crops at homeand on idle land.

“The Green Earth and Edible Garden projects implemented in Felda schemes can reduce our dependence on imported foodstuff,” he said after presenting agriculture equipments to farmers under Bera Parliamentary Agricultural Development Council in Durian Tawar recently.

Ismail who is also Bera Member of Parliament said the Green Earth and Edible Garden projects should be supported by all.

“I believe that implementation of the projects in all parliamentary contituencies will indirectly save the people and government cost,” he added.
