Nearly 20,000 teachers have obtained Bachelor of Education degrees since 2006 under an Education Ministry programme carried out in collaboration with Open University Malaysia.

OUM vice-chancellor and president Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Anuwar Ali said today that 5,685 teachers had been chosen this semester for the four-year degree course.

The course covers 11 subjects, including Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Cina, Islamic studies, mathematics and science, he told reporters after a briefing on registration for the 2011 intake to be conducted from today to Thursday.

Anuwar said the selected teachers would study at 20 OUM centres through out the country. The programme under the ministry’s teacher education division is to ensure that all teachers in secondary schools and at least 50 per cent in primary schools are degree holders.
