The Prisons Department will set up a halfway house in Tawau where newly-released prisoners will be placed for three months prior to their employment.

Its director-general, Wira Zulkifli Omar said, the facility was the first of its kind in Sabah and the location had also been identified.

“We currently have two halfway houses, one in Kuala Lumpur and one in Johor, where 24 ex-convicts are being accommodated,” he told reporters after presenting?2010 excellent service awards to the Sabah Prisons Department, here today.

A total of 90 prison officers and staff of various ranks throughout Sabah received the awards.

Zulkifli said besides Sabah, the Prisons Department had plans for halfway houses in Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Pahang and Kelantan.

He added that the department also hoped to build halfway houses at all of its institutions nationwide in stages.
