Kedah has successfully reduced the crime rate index last year by 8.17 per cent or 990 cases from 12,116 cases in 2010 to 11,126 cases last year, Kedah police chief Ahmad Ibrahim said.
He said case resolution rate dropped slightly by 0.83 per cent last year since from the 11,126 cases reported, 5,324 cases were solved or 47.85 percent compared with 5,898 cases or 48.68 per cent in 2010.
“We are not satisfied with the achievement as motorcycle theft and house break-in cases are still rampant and the case resolution rate need to be increased so that criminals can be charged in court,” he said at a monthly assembly at Anak Bukit Multipurpose Hall yesterday.
Ahmad said the Kedah Narcotics division had also seized 33,731.86 grams of heroin, more than 286,000gms of ganja, syabu (20,247gms), ketamine (3,390gms), 2,716 pieces of ecstasy pills and 3,508 psychotropic pills.
He said Kedah police seized 1.6 million grams of ketum leafs and more than 58,000 litres of ketum leafs’ juice while police also arrested 12,106 people for various drug offences last year.
He said in efforts to reduce criminal activities like family quarrels, mat rempit activities and thefts in rural areas, police would increase their focus on rural areas.
In the past police had been focusing in the city and three crime-prone districts, Kota Setar, Kuala Muda and Kulim, he said.
