The MoU was signed with the intentions to spearhead conservation efforts and to promote the Teochew culture in Malaysia.

Delegation of 18 members headed by Vice Mayor, Zhou Seng Song from Shantau City visited Johor Bahru to sign a friendship Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently.

The MoU was signed with the intentions to spearhead conservation efforts and to promote the Teochew culture in Malaysia.

Johor Bahru Mayor, Burhan Amin said that the visit by the Shantou delegation marked an important milestone for both cities as the state has had long associations with the Teochews.

“This collaboration offers unique opportunity for both cities to work together in cultural and economic development as well as exchange of personnel to promote common development,” said Burhan.

“We have a lot to learn from Shantou, including ways to improve cleanliness and infrastructure, and how to fully utilise our resources and to eliminate urban poor,” he said in his address to the Shantou delegation here.

Following this visit, both Mayors are looking into the possibility to have a direct flight from Shantou to Johor Bahru to foster closer relationship.
