The Dewan Rakyat heard today that 414,421 road accidents with 6,872 deaths were reported in 2010.
Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Rahim Bakri said due to the rising number of road accidents and fatalities in the country, various drastic measures had been taken to curb the problem.
“Among them are community-based road safety awareness campaigns with the main target group being motorcycle riders and pillion riders who are at high risk as 60 per cent of the fatalities involved this group,” he said in reply to a question from Datuk Lilah Yasin (BN-Jempol).
Abdul Rahim said the ministry was also intensifyng road safety media campaigns through premier television channels and the print media, as well as through the Facebook social network and YouTube.
“We are also implementing the Automatic Enforcement System to reduce road accidents caused by speeding, which contributes 62.6 per cent of the fatalities.”
He said the ministry also stepped up inspections on buses and enforcement through omnipresence in integrated operations, besides ensuring other initiatives were moving in tandem for effectiveness of the measures undertaken.
“These include the 5E approach — education, enforcement, engineering,environment and evaluation — which are key to the Malaysia Road Safety Plan 2011-2020 to tackle the problem in a holistic and comprehensive manner,” he said.
