All counter operators for the coupon taxi system will have to apply for terminal licences from the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) from next year.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Ahmad Maslan said the move was to facilitate monitoring by SPAD to ensure the operations and services given did not burden consumers and entreprenuers.
He was replying to a question from Senator Chin Su Phin on the ministry’s action in tackling the problem of taxi drivers not using meters in tourism areas.
“Nevertheless, a coupon must not exceed RM2 while the taxis involved are still required to use meters as had been gazetted and enforced on Sept 3,” he said.
He said SPAD would also monitor and increase enforcement activities from time to time together with other enforcement agencies to make sure taxi drivers obeyed the law.
On the action which had been taken against taxi drivers who did not use the meter, Ahmad said those found guilty were punished under Section 22 (3) of the Public Land Transport Act 2010.
