Marcel SimokThe Double Six was the tragic crash of a Nomad plane 34 years ago and the incident is still remembered vividly by Sabahans till today.
The crash of the ill-fated plane took place on June 6, 1976 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia killing everyone on board including Tun Fuad Donald Stephens, the then Chief Minister of Sabah.
The others who perished in the crash were state ministers Salleh Sulong, Chong Thien Vun and assistant minister Darius Binion.
The reason behind the crash is uncertain. Immediately after the accident there were allegations of foul play because of the death of the then Chief Minister, but no evidence of such has ever been found.
Sabah Progressive Party president Yong Teck Lee said that Tengku Razaleigh’s first-hand account during his recent visit to the state of how his life had been saved when he left the ill-fated aircraft at the very last moment when he was invited by former chief minister Harris Salleh to board another aircraft, reopens speculation about the crash.
But his revelation could also, according to Dr Jefferey Kitigan means nothing other than being thankful to be alive. Video by S L Chong, Citizen Journalist
