Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) held a debriefing and presentation session by program grantees for the Fulbright Malaysian and U.S. exchange program at their Kuala Lumpur office today.
H.E. Paul W. Jones , U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia was the Guest of Honor to present the certificates to the grantees.
The Fulbright Program was established in 1963 to promote inter-cultural understanding through education and educational exchange between Malaysia and the United States.
The Fulbright Program is flagship international exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
The Fulbright program has provided study opportunities to approximately 294,000 participants, chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential-with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
Annually, MACEE provides 25-30 grants for Malaysians under various categories.
The Fulbright Program was established by the U.S. Congress in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright.
It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
More than one quarter million people worldwide have participated in the Fulbright program, including nearly one thousand Malaysians.
Fulbright grants in Malaysia are awarded on the basis of academic merit and professional promise.
MACEE also, provides a number of grants under various Fulbright program categories to U.S. citizens to conduct research, teach, or study in Malaysia.
The following Grants are available for Malaysians:
1.Fulbright Malaysian Scholar Program
Malaysian academics with a doctoral degree and attached to an institution of high learning are eligible to apply for this program. The grant allows successful applicants to lecture or conduct postdoctoral research for three to six months at U.S. colleges and universities.
2. Fulbright Malaysian Professional Exchange Program
Program for mid-career professionals in the public or private sectors to broaden their horizons through research, consultation and other professional enrichment programs for a period of three to six months at U.S. colleges and universities.
3.Fulbright Malaysian Graduate Study and Research Program
Enables graduate students, young professionals and artists to conduct research and study in the United States. Partial grant and will be awarded for one year academic study leading to Master’s or Doctoral degrees (one year extension allowed for degree-track grants.)
4. The International Fulbright Science and technology Award
Provides grants to exceptional and outstanding graduate students for doctoral study at leading U.S. institutions in science, technology and related fields.
5. Hubert H. Humphrey Program
A program for mid-career professionals where they will receive maximum benefit from one academic year of non-degree study in the U.S. Candidates must be employed in public or private sector organizations with public service orientation and continue employment upon their return.
6. Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA)
Provides opportunities for TESL fresh graduates and teachers of English aged 21 to 29 to refine their teaching skills, increase their English proficiency, and expand their knowledge of U.S. society and values while strengthening Bahasa Malaysia language instructions at U.S. colleges and universities.
Other U.S. Grants ( Non Fulbright Program):
1. 2013 International Leaders in Education Program
Five months professional development program for Malaysian secondary school teachers in English, Maths, Science and Social Sciences to learn teaching methodology and classroom experience.
2. Global Undergraduate Exchange Program
The program offers scholarships for a semester or a full academic year of non-degree study in the United States to undergraduate emerging student leaders from underrepresented groups. The program also includes community service activities and internships.
