After two years of delay, the first ever Kuching Tattoo Festival is finally taking place from September 30 to October 2 at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Hall.
The tattoo festival was initially planned for 2020 but was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The three-day event will take place from 10 am until 9 pm at the DBNA Hall, Kuching.
The festival is organised by Skrang Tattoo Studio And Inkzation Tattoo Studio to create awareness of the Dayak heritage, and to dispel the negative connotations surrounding tattoos.
The festival will see more than 80 tattoo artists showcasing tattoo artistry from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and the Philippines.
“Tattoo enthusiasts keen to know more about the event or even make appointments with their favourite tattoo artists can surf our Facebook page Kuching Tattoo Festival 2022, and check out the artists they would like to make an appointment with.
“Events like this usually will receive a very good response from the community who have interest in culture and art,” said Boi at the press conference at DBNA yesterday.
Tattoo enthusiasts or the public in general are invited to the festival, where they can watch the process of tattooing or even get themselves inked.
Besides focusing on tattoos, the three-day event also highlights Dayak handicrafts, food and drinks, and traditional rituals and ceremonies.
“There are also booths exhibiting our local handicrafts and traditional products. Food and drinks will be under the canopy at the DBNA compound, the handicrafts will be on the hall’s balcony, and the tattooing will be inside the hall.
“On the first day of the event, we will have ‘miring’, and there are also some tattoo exhibitions and demos by the tattoo artists,” he said.
Other than tattoos, the three-day event will also highlight Dayak handicrafts, traditional rituals, ceremonies, food and drinks.
Entrance fee is RM10 per person.
