The Toothpick

Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Sharyn Shufiyan is the daughter of two former journalists which perhaps contributed to her love of writing. Her somewhat liberal, somewhat leftist views were formed during college studying Mass Communications, where she was enlightened by freedom of speech, Rousseau, Marx and other various schools of thought. Her thoughts were later intensified after spending 3 years in New Zealand, experiencing what ‘real’ democracy is and enjoying the thrill of marches without spending the night in jail.
A supporter of equality, democracy and cultural relativism, Sharyn is just another average girl weary of the political and social situation of her dear country.
“I’m not off tangent. I’m walking on the same road, at a slower pace, enjoying the view. I see people taking pictures, locking themselves in. I prefer to stay out of the frame, from here the view is wider.”
