Perak leaves locals in the dark

Despite installation of electrical wiring 10 years ago and submission of application for power supply, 13 families in Kampung Bukit Royong still live without electricity.

According to a local resident, 53-year-old Zali Ahmad, they had tried their best to obtain electricity for the village since 1996 but still they do not see signs that they will be getting electricity any time soon.

“Those responsible had promised to provide electricity for the village but it all remains empty promises,” he said.

However, neighbouring villages such as Kampung Pahit Luar, Kampung Pahit Tengah and Kampung Pahit Dalam are supplied with electricity.

Zali said those involved such as Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the District Office and Perak Menteri Besar’s Office were also informed of their application for power supply since 2003, but the response they received remains “it will be done”.

A survey at the village found 10 houses with electrical wiring done by a wiring contractor 10 years ago which cost almost RM450 per house.

Zali said until now the residents there use kerosene lamps for light. “The other villagers and myself still hope to obtain electricity for our
homes soon and are confident that the Perak government, under Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, will hear us out,” he added.

Fauziah Jaafar, 49, said her children went to school wearing unironed uniforms because they could not use electrical appliances.
Tahrin Yaakob, 50, was disappointed that their application seemed to be forgotten by those involved.

“Three reply letters we received showed that there would be no problem supplying electricity to our village, but until today nothing has been done,” he said.
