The road safety campaign carried out by the Road Safety Department helped to reduce the number of fatal accidents involving motorcyclists by a mere 31 cases last year.
Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said a total of 4,036 fatal accidents involving motorcyclists were reported last year, from 4,067 cases in 2009.
“This shows a new trend. The fact that we are doing this campaign and carrying on with this campaign shows that our message has reached the society.
“From random observation carried out by the department, most motorcyclists now wear the crash helmet properly” he told reporters after the launch of a road safety campaign and installation of 100,000 rear seat belts organised by the department and Perodua at the Sungai Besi toll plaza today.
Meanwhile, Perodua managing director, Aminar Rashid Salleh, who also present at the function, advised Perodua vehicle owners to avoid last-minute rush to get their rear seatbelts installed at Perodua service outlets.
He said the government had indicated that it would not extend the Dec 31 deadline for owners to get their vehicles fitted with the rear seatbelts.
“From 1 Jan 2009 to 31 March 2011, only 214,887 Perodua owners have sent their vehicles out of the total 526,722 units that are required to undergo inspection and retrofitting,” he added.
