Ex-policeman convicted for soliciting bribe over murder case

A former police constable attached to the Johor Bahru (South) police station was yesterday sentenced to six months jail and fined for a soliciting bribe as an inducement to ‘resolve’ a murder case from eight years ago.

Judicial Commissioner, Kamardin Hashim, ordered Ramadzan Abdul Karim, 53, to pay the fine within seven days from date of judgement in lieu two months’ jail.

According to the charge sheet, the accused was caught receiving a RM1,000 bribe by the road side, near a shopping mall in Tampoi on July 19, 2007.

During the hearing, the court was told that the accused’s demand for a RM10,000 payment as an inducement to resolve a murder case was not entertained.

After an appeal from the defence counsel, Kamardin allowed for a stay of execution pending the completion of some work that the accused is undertaking in a village.

Prior to sentencing, Kamardin noted that the accused had been dismissed from the police force and all his benefits, including his pension, forfeited.

Johor MACC DPP Abdul Ghafar Abdul Latif prosecuted the case.

The case was investigated under section 11(a) of the Anti Corruption Act 1997 and carries a maximum sentence of 20 years jail and a fine of not less than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
