A warrior’s square, memorial park and Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM)/Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) museum will be built in Putrajaya in appreciation of the contribution of military and police personnel to the country, said Defence Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said construction would begin this year at an initial cost of RM10million and that the three projects were expected to be completed in two years.
“The Ministry of Defence and the Home Ministry are holding consultations on the design and elements to be included. Thereafter we will update the prime minister on the final cost of these three projects,” he told reporters after meeting Sarawak veterans at Gymkhana.
At the function, he also presented the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) medal to 10 veterans, subsistence allowance to three and cheques from the Warriors Day Fund to four Ex-Servicemen’s Association representatives from around Miri.
Ahmad Zahid said besides being the venue for ATM’s anniversary celebrations in future, the square, park and museum would be added attractions in the federal administrative capital for tourists, students and the general public.
He then added that the square, park and museum would be on par with those in Canberra and West Point, United States.
He also said that an allocation had been approved for the upgrading of quarters at ATM’s Miri camp. “The present quarters we built in the 60s and 70s and are in need of upgrading,” he added.
