A grandmother was sentenced to death today after the High Court here found her guilty of trafficking heroin weighing
92.68 grammes in August 2009.
The accused, Mariah Hamadi, 49, of Rantau Panjang, and has seven grandchildren, was charged with committing the offence within the compound of the Padang Nenas mosque in Mengabang Telipot at about 3.45pm on Aug 30, 2009.
Judge Datuk Mohd Yazid Mustafa said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
He said that despite attempts by the defence to raise doubts by arguing that the accused was just taking the item on behalf of a friend named Ida without knowing its content, the court found the statement to be false.
The accused, he said, had previously testified that she was going to Kuala Berang with his husband to visit her husband’s relatives whom she had not known before, and had dropped by at the mosque to pass the item to a person in the
mosque.
“But it is not logical for the accused to take the coastal road from Rantau Panjang to Kuala Berang and then dropping by at the mosque because of the distance,” he said, adding that the accused had also turned pale and was shivering when she was arrested by the police, proving that she knew the content of the items she was carrying.
