63-Year-Old Great Grandma Makes The Cut to Pageant Finals

KUALA LUMPUR – Liaw has made it to the grand final of the beauty pageant and is now a step closer to becoming the new Classic beauty queen.

63-year-old June Liaw Kim Mooi bagged the Best Traditional Costume subsidiary title in the Classic category during the Classic & Mrs Malaysia Globe 2016 semi final in Petaling Jaya.

The Classic and Mrs Malaysia Globe 2016 pageant kicked off its talent and costume round with 26 semi finalists competed against each other at Evolve Concept Mall, Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya on July 2.

The contestants were grouped into Mrs category (aged 30 – 40) and Classic category (aged 41-63) and had to dress in a traditional costume of their choice and demonstrate a talent such as dancing, singing or any other talent as part of the judging process.

Based on poise and grace of the contestants and performances, the winners of the Best Traditional Costume subsidiary title for Mrs and Classic category and the Top 6 Best Talent were announced.

One particular winner that stood out from the rest is June Liaw Kim Mooi, a 63-year-old who is the mother of five kids, 12 grand children and one great grandchild. Liaw, a housewife, clinched the subsidiary title of Best Traditional Costume in the Classic category and was named one of the six best talent performers.

June Liaw has made it to the grand final of Classic & Mrs Malaysia Globe 2016 grand final after wowing with a dance performance despite being 63 years old.

During the talent round when Liaw came out on stage, she surprised everyone with her outfit choice despite her age. With her hands raised, she twisted her hips and shook her body as the music played wowing the audience and the judges who gave a huge thumbs up to her.

Liaw has made it to the grand final of the beauty pageant and is now a step closer to becoming the new Classic beauty queen.

“I am very excited and thankful to get through this far. I really enjoy the pageants and will try to do my best to win the pageant crown in the final,” she said with a smile.

Liaw said she competed in her first Mrs contest in 2001 at the age of 48 where she won second place in a competition organised by a restaurant in Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur. She then moved on to more contests and became the winner four times in Mother’s Day contests.

The event also saw the award of Mrs Charming subsidiary title which went to 32-year-old singer Zenny Chong Hooi Choo from Kuala Lumpur.

The six best talent performers will perform again to compete for the Best Talent subsidiary title at the grand final to be at the grand ballroom of The Place @ One City, Subang Jaya on August 13, 2016.

The Classic & Mrs Malaysia Globe 2016 pageant is organised by Three Gorgeous Network. Its co-founder Isabelle Liow said the pageant marked the fourth time that it was successfully organised.

“Since 1996, Mrs Globe has been celebrated as the largest international pageant for Mrs in the world. For a Malaysian to participate in one of the top married women contest in the world, it will give our winner a chance to showcase the diverse culture and tourism of fascinating Malaysia to the rest of the world. I am sure she will be a worthy ambassador of goodwill for Malaysia.

“I would like to thank our contestants for contributing their time and energy to participate in this pageant and I wish all the finalists good luck and hope the representative will do Malaysia proud at the international pageant,” said Liow.
