A new scheme to enable welfare homes to be run professionally would be created in Sarawak to enhance public confidence towards such facilities, Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said, here, today.
He said the scheme would consider people who were without paper qualification but possessed the natural 
aptitude to serve the less fortunate in society to be considered for key positions in the homes’ operation.
Speaking to declare open the extension block of the Hamidah Yakup Welfare Complex at Bandar Baru Permas Jaya here, he said the scheme would be in line with the state’s aspiration to create a caring society.
Under the proposed scheme, Taib said the state wanted to widen the door to the less fortunate members of the public regardless of their racial or religious background.
“The opening of the Welfare Complex is just one of the efforts which we had initiated that reflected our concept of inclusivity, rather than exclusivity,” he added
At the ceremony, Taib also witnessed the handing over of donations from various individuals and companies totaling RM301,000 towards the complex operation.
Sarawak Assistant Minister of Islamic Affairs, Daud Abdul Rahman who also spoke at the ceremony said the State Government had pledged to match the total amount of donations for the complex.
He said the Hamidah Yakup Welfare Complex was one of the two welfare complexes to accommodate orphans of all races in the State. The other being the Laila Taib Welfare Complex in Kuching.
Another such complex is currently being built in Sibu while a fourth complex is planned to be set up in Bintulu, he added.
Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Dr George Chan was also present at the ceremony.
