Twenty-seven papaya growers whose crops were destroyed by a disease scientifically known as “papaya dieback” were given a subsidy totalling about RM234,000 to compensate for their losses.
The State Executive Councillor for Agriculture, Sabry Ahmad presented the federal government aid at a brief ceremony at the Bukit Temiang Agricultural Complex, here today.
He said the farmers had been growing the crop since 2009 at Kampung Penghulu Jaafar, Bukit Chabang, Kubang Tiga, Felda Rimba Emas, Chuping and Pauh on an area measuring 101.45 hectares.
The attack destroyed about 10,000 papaya trees recently. Each affected farmer received a subsidy of between RM1, 680 and RM25, 000 depending on the size of their plot and the value of their loss.
