Johor Bahru is under surveillance

The Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) is determined to make the streets in and around the city a much safer place in the months ahead.

The city mayor, Mohd Jaffar Awang, said various measures have been taken to towards this end, including the installation of CCTV security cameras in areas that have been identified as crime-prone.

Besides the 18 CCTV existing security cameras, another 32 will be installed in densely populated areas such as Larkin and Jalan Wong Ah Fook in the next two months, with more in other areas as well.

“We are planning to install another 200 CCTV security cameras in the coming months as we have found it very effective in combatting crime in the city,” said Mohd Jaffar in a press conference in conjunction with the event, ‘ A Safe and Protected City in Iskandar Malaysia’ here yesterday.

The two-day conference was officiated by the state secretary, Abdul Latiff Yusof. Also present were the CEO of Iskandar Regional Development Authority, Ismail Ibrahim, and the Deputy State Police Chief, Jalaludin Abdul Rahman.

Mohd Jaffar added that MBJB has satisfied 22 out of the 23 criteria for creating a safer city. The final criterion is the mapping system, which will involve the police department.

To date, the MBJB has spent some RM2 million on the installation of the CCTV security cameras and will be spending another RM1.3 million on phase three, for 12 more CCTV security cameras and four units of Nomadic.

The CCTV security system are being jointly monitored by the city council and the police department.
