Cheer for Miss Grand Selangor 2020 finalists at press party

Ten finalists of the Miss Grand Selangor 2020 pageant make their first official grand entrance at Soulmade Puchong on Feb 25, 2020

Miss Grand Selangor 2020 is all set to crown its new queen at the grand finale to be held at Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC) on 29th March 2020.

The 10 finalists for this year’s competition, all from Selangor with diverse backgrounds and interests, were officially announced to the media at a press party held at Soulmade, Puchong on 25th Feb.

The 10 finalists are:

Jia Hui, 25, 173cm, student
Lisha, 23, 174 cm, architecture student 
Meagala, 24, 175cm, marketing executive
Mellanie Yew, 23, 163cm, entrepreneur/dance instructor
Mia, 25, 165cm, beauty consultant
Priya DK, 23, 165cm, cabin crew
Priya Sai, 23, 168cm, account assistant/student
Reeta, 21, 165cm, front desk assistant

During the sashing ceremony of the ten finalists, every one of them was presented with their sash emblazoned with the words ‘Miss Grand Selangor 2020 Finalist’ and carefully draped over their shoulders by Miss Intercontinental Malaysia 2019 Haaraneei MK, who is also reigning Miss Grand Selangor 2019.

The exquisite ceremony was also attended by Miss Grand Malaysia national director Jude Benjamin Lisa and Miss Grand Malaysia 2019 Mel Dequanne Abar.

Speaking at the party, Miss Grand Selangor 2020 state coordinator Kingsley Tham said the Miss Grand Selangor 2020 competition had begun officially with the sashing ceremony.

He said contestants will undergo intensive practice and training during pageant week from 27 to 29 March in areas including opening dance, walking in bikini and evening gown. They will also attend dinners hosted by pageant’s sponsors. There will also be an indoor judging by beauty pageant experts or former beauty queens.

The winner and first-runner will go on to compete at the national level for Miss Grand Malaysia 2020 crown at the end of June this year and eventually the champion will be representing Malaysia to the Miss Grand International 2020 pageant finals in Caracas, Venezuela.

Miss Grand Selangor 2020 finalist Mia is a MBBS graduate.

Mia, 25, is a medical graduate from Mahsa University. She graduated in Nov last year with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in second class upper division level.  

She was lucky to receive a job offer as beauty consultant immediately after her study first at Hannan Medispa and now at Ava Skin Laser.

“As I have learned about dermatology and they want some help or assistance with their current dermato or aesthetic doctors. It’s a very interesting job and I met a few seniors than me. I learned a lot of new things, especially about the aesthetic industry and it’s also good for me since I am interested in aesthetic,” she said.

The 165cm (5’5”) tall beauty previously participated in Miss Bollywood and Miss Kebaya pageants.

“Being in pageants enables me to learn more and meeting new people. I hope to be an influencer to achieve more in the industry and also in my medical industry. Ultimately pageant serves to show that a woman can be very beautiful and very smart too,” she added.

Mia loves to do gym workout. In her leisure time, she enjoys swimming, horse riding, singing and modeling for clothes.

Miss Grand Selangor 2020 finalist Mellanie Yew will be going all out to prove her worth.

Mellanie Yew, 23, from Klang is an entrepreneur and dance instructor. She learned a lot about business of production after starting a production company with a partner. She is brilliant and passionate about dancing and has been dancing since she was a child.

“I learned dancing at age 4 and as I grew older and stronger at 13 or 14 years old, I felt it was my calling to make dancing my passion. Then my dance school trained me as a dance teacher assistant in classes and I think one of the best things I’ve done is today I have become a dance instructor.

“I feel happy when I dance and feel even happier when I see how the kids love dancing. As a dancer and entrepreneur, handling both sides are definitely harder than I think but I feel blessed to be who I am today,” she said.

The 163 cm (5′ 4″) tall beauty had participated in previous pageants and was first runner-up in Miss Petite Spokesperson 2017 and second runner-up in Miss Chipao Malaysia 2019.

She is excited to be a finalist of Miss Grand Selangor 2020 and will be going all out to prove her worth.

“What I hope to achieve from this pageant is courage. For me, courage takes a big role in our life. When we face any situation, we need to have the heart of courage to face challenges. Never give up in believing yourself.”

Yew loves dancing as it helps to reduce her stress and her other interest is music which can cheer her up when she is not in good mood.  

This year, there are six states participating in Miss Grand Malaysia 2020 including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Melaka, Sabah and Sarawak. The six states will have two top winners each to reach the national level for a total of 12 finalists. Another 12 finalists will be chosen as wild card 2020 finalists from state-level competitions, making it a total number of 24 finalists competing against each other to clinch the coveted title of Miss Grand Malaysia 2020.

The grand sponsor for Miss Grand Selangor 2020 is Fine Japan (health food supplements). Among the first group of sponsors are Beaute Library (facial care), NailBox (nail salon), Bikini Malaysia (swimwear), F45 (gym partner), Meraki (healthy meal), Smile (teeth whitening beauty) and MaTic (grand final venue).
