The haze over Penang, which started several days ago, is caused by the burning of paddy chaff in several areas, according to a state environment department spokesman.
The situation had worsened because of the dry and hot weather that Penang had been experiencing since last week, Badlishah Ahmad said.
“However, the haze is at the medium level and not worrying. The situation will change once we have strong winds that move rain clouds,” he added.
The air pollution index rose to between 60 and 75 in several areas today, compared to between 50 and 65 yesterday.
