A grand Ponggal festival organised in Klang recently became the largest celebration of its kind in Malaysia after around 1210 ‘Ponggal pots’ were boiled during the ocassion.
In spite of heavy rain during the morning, 3,000 Indians along with Selangor Exco member Xavier Jeyakumar and Klang MP Charles Santiago still made their way to Jalan Tengku Kelana in Klang, where they arranged one pot after another, adorning the whole Tengku Kelana street.
The event also served as a launching occasion for a local Selangor Tamil newspaper minted as ‘Selangor Indru’ (Selangor Today).
“This newspaper will be published twice a month,” said Xavier later during the function.
The celebration was enhanced further when Charles announced Jalan Tengku Kelana as a new ‘Little India’, earmarking it as a tourist spot.
The event was organised by the Selangor state government along with NGOs, around 40 temple associations, the Malaysian Hindu Sangam and others.
A cheque of RM 10,000 was handed over to the National Cancer Association, while another RM 4,000 was handed over to the Red Cross Association during the function.
