Kyle Larson to race again in NASCAR’s top series

Kyle Larson will be officially returning to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2021 after signing a multiyear contract with Hendrick Motorsports.

Hendrick Motorsports announced that Larson will drive the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, which the team hasn’t run since 2017.

Larson was suspended from NASCAR and fired by his former team, Chip Ganassi Racing following the use of a racial slur on a streamed iRacing event in April.

His suspension will be lifted on January 1, 2021 after completing a sensitivity training class and traveling around the United States to learn more about racial injustice in the country.

“NASCAR continues to prioritize diversity and inclusion across our sport. Kyle Larson has fulfilled the requirements set by NASCAR, and has taken several voluntary measures, to better educate himself so that he can use his platform to help bridge the divide in our country.” NASCAR said in a statement.

“Larson’s indefinite suspension has been lifted. Under the terms of his reinstatement, he will be cleared to return to all NASCAR racing activities effective January 1, 2021.” The statement added.

While under suspension, Larson returned to the dirt tracks and has competed in the World of Outlaws, where he has claimed several victories over the past few months.

“Kyle is unquestionably one of the most talented race car drivers in the world. He has championship-level ability and will be a significant addition to our on-track program. More importantly, I have full confidence that he understands our expectations and will be a tremendous ambassador for our team, our partners and NASCAR.” owner of Hendrick Motorsports Rick Hendrick said in an announcement.

“Kyle and I have had many, many conversations leading up to today’s announcement. I’m confident about what’s in his heart and his desire to be a champion in all aspects of his life and career. Kyle has done important work over the past six months, and Hendrick Motorsports is going to support those continued efforts.”

The driver will be paired with crew chief Cliff Daniels who will lead the No. 48 team together with Jimmie Johnson who is retiring from full-time racing after the season.

At 28-years old, he will be the oldest driver in the team with future teammates teammates Alex Bowman (27), Chase Elliott (24) and William Byron (22).
