The Arabic signage at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) has been detected to have many scribal errors.
Missing dots, alphabets and misspelling have been observed on Arabic signage all around the airport.
“This is a very serious matter because it affects the reputation of our country’s scholars. To make matters worse, KKIA is the international gateway to Sabah,” said Earnie Elmie Binti Hilmi, lecturer at the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning, University Malaysia Sabah.
“The eagerness of the authorities to put signage in Arabic is laudable. However grammatical errors must be rectified immediately for the benefit of the tourists who use the language,” Haji Muhammad Akmal Othman, secretary of Muslim Scholars Association of Malaysia (Sabah Branch) told KomunitiKini.
Fortunately, most travellers at the airport fail to notice the errors because they do not read the language.
