New one-way traffic gets mixed reactions

While the move is seen as a blessing for some local residents, the new ruling system poses problems for others- such as traffic congestion and major parking headaches.

A recently installed one-way road system has been subject to mixed reception from the residents of Overseas Union Garden (OUG).

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has recently imposed a strict one-way street rule along Jalan Hujan Emas 4 and Jalan Hujan Rahmat 1 at the Pusat Bandar OUG.

While the move is seen as a blessing for some local residents, the new ruling system poses problems for others- such as traffic congestion and major parking headaches.

“Some like it for the more efficient traffic flow, while some dislike it,” said Seputeh Member of Parliament Teresa Kok at the press conference early this morning at OUG.

“Of course it will be chaotic in the beginning. Now more or less it’s settling down. We want to get feedback from the people if they like the new system or not. We need to give them (the people) some time to get used to the traffic flow. If they’re not happy, perhaps the DBKL can change it back to the original flow,” she added.

The limited amount of parking spaces available further constrict the already-congested road in OUG, leading some of the shoppers and business owners to double-park along Jalan Hujan Emas and Jalan Hujan Rahmat 1 leading towards the main road.

“Obviously there are not enough of parking spaces available. Those who double-park their cars are further congesting the road, and when the DBKL officers issue summon to car owners, some of them made noises. Here, I urge all the business owners and residents to avoid double-parking,” she said.

A further investigation showed that there is a parking complex available beside the Ong Lay Restaurant.

The complex, which was built in 1997, charges RM 2 per entry.

A personnel from the DBKL office said that so far he hasn’t received any negative feedback from the residents.

Teresa also urged the residents to come forward to give their comments and feedbacks regarding the matter.

They can do so by emailing all their feedbacks to [email protected] or by calling her office at 03 7983 7576.
