The plantation industries and commodities ministry has plans to assist school-leavers carve a niche in the furniture industry.
It is set to introduce a new model in the skills programme to cultivate the school leavers, especially those from technical and vocational streams, to mould them into furniture entrepreneurs.
Deputy Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainudin said the model would be implemented when the ministry signed an agreement with the education ministry’s vocational teaching division early next month.
To implement the programme at the early stage, he said the Johor-based Sekolah Menengah Teknik — which produces timber products — had been chosen.
“This means, the introduction of another skill which has big potential for technical and vocational schools,” he told reporters after officiating the Sekolah Menengah Teknik (Agriculture) graduating ceremony here last night. Hamzah said that such schools would not only focus on the academic but could also delve into cultivating new talents and skills.
Apart from that, he said the ministry was also in collaboration with the Malaysian Cocoa Authority to produce students with skills in making cocoa-based products.
He hoped that by having the programme, such skills would enable the country to become a potential cocoa producer in the near future.
