Airport still operating despite floods

The Sultan Abdul Halim Airport (LTSAH) in Kepala Batas here is still operating as usual although the areas nearby are flooded.

The airport’s head of operations unit, Abdul Rashid Md Yusob said the southern part of the runway was still dry while the northern part was under control although it was slightly flooded.

“As at 1.30pm, the situation at the airport was still under control and we constantly monitor and ensure that the water pump is working well,” he said when contacted, here today.

The airport handles Malaysia Airline System’s (MAS) flights from Alor Setar to Kuala Lumpur three times daily; Air Asia’s flights from Alor Setar to Kuala Lumpur (twice); and FireFly from Alor Setar to Subang (twice).

The airport is located 12 kilometres from Alor Setar and could handle up to 800,000 passengers annually.

Meanwhile, a check by Bernama in the vicinity of the Air Force College (KTU) near the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport here found that water had risen in the area in front of the college while the Pilatus PC7 aircraft used for training trainee pilots had still not been moved.
