The RM200 million project to re-open the Segget River would begin early next year, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said today.
He said the project would be implemented by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, during his visit here last May.
“The river will be re-opened and built as a double-decked river. The upper deck will channel clean water while the lower deck will channel treated sewage to the Tebrau Straits,” he said after opening the Kwong Siew Wai Kuan Heritage Gallery here today.
When announcing the allocation for the project, Najib also visualised the Segget River to become a new tourist attraction like Venice in Italy.
The rehabilitation of the river using the effective micro-organisms method is part of the Johor Baharu city transformation plan under the 10th Malaysia Plan.
