The number of fatal accidents, involving all vehicle types, from January to July this year recorded an increase of 1.5 per cent from the corresponding period last year, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said.

He said a total of 912 fatal accidents were reported during the period this year from 854 cases last year.

He said this in his speech at the opening of a road safety campaign in conjunction with the coming Deepavali celebration at the USJ ELITE overhead restaurant near here today.

The text of the speech was read by the ministry’s deputy secretary-general (planning), Datuk Kamaruzaman Mohd Noor.

However, he said the number of accident victims who were seriously injured dropped by 9.6 per cent from 4,083 last year to 3,690 this year.

Abdul Rahim said motorcyclists remained the highest fatalities, involving 2,287 cases, although the number dropped by 12 from 2,308 cases last year.
