SMCV hosts carnival on elderly health

The community outreach event provided the public with complimentary health screenings and health talks for a health-focused day of interactions

Sunway Medical Centre Velocity (SMCV) recently held an elderly-focused Wellness Sunday Carnival themed “Live Well, Be Well” for its community in Taman Connaught, Cheras.

Held on 4 December, the carnival was open to the public for their participation for half a day to promote awareness on the importance of elderly healthcare and share further insight into specific health issues commonly faced by our elders.

Dr Khoo Chow Huat, Managing Director, Hospital and Healthcare Operations of Sunway Healthcare Group shares that the hospital was dedicated towards supporting the wellbeing of the community, and health of the elderly would always be a priority. “Ageing is a natural cadence of life, and the elderly along with their caregivers deserve the right to have knowledge on how to deal with arising conditions from healthcare providers such as us. This is why we have community outreach events such as this to get to know the people’s needs and concerns regarding their health so that we can support them where they need it most.”

Also present at the event are Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Chairman of Alliance for a Safe Community and Ms Margaret Aik, Chairman of Resident Association of Taman Connaught.

Delivering the opening remarks, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye congratulated SMCV for its initiative to organize the “Wellness Sunday Carnival” for the community. “As a hospital that looks after the needs of the people, SMCV has done much to journey with their patients and ensure that they have access to treatments that they require. The main purpose of a healthcare provider is to elevate the wellbeing of its patients, and it is indeed encouraging to see the many lives that SMCV has touched and will continue to contribute positively in the years to come for the well-being of the community.”

The Wellness Sunday Carnival, which was attended by Cheras residents and surrounding communities, provided members of the public with the opportunity to listen to and speak with SMCV consultants and healthcare staffs about various health conditions that were of concern to them. This included complimentary health screenings, hearing tests, medicine and dietitian consultations, assessments by the hospital’s rehabilitation team, eye checks, foot assessment for elderly diabetic patients and other basic screenings. The elderly and their family members also enjoyed complimentary massage sessions provided by the Blind Association of Malaysia.

The family-friendly event also included food stalls and a dedicated children’s corner available with face art, clay art and balloonist so they could be entertained while their family members participated in the various events at hand.

For individuals interested to find out more about elderly healthcare, it is advisable to visit their trusted healthcare partners who can provide a more accurate assessment on the patient’s current state of health and next steps to manage it accordingly.
