Catch World Cup fever at Dataran Merdeka

Football frenzy reaches new heights as DBKL launched KUL View 2010 yesterday, inviting all football fans to watch the matches at Dataran Merdeka.

Just a day before the World Cup South Africa officially kicks off, DBKL unveiled good news for all KL folks as Dataran Merdeka will be turned into a frenzy fiesta to broadcast all 64 matches live.

With a 50′ X 20′ wide screen , football fans can now enjoy every adrenaline-driven moment in the month-long fest with no charge incurred.

KL mayor Ahmad Fuad bin Ismail when launching the KUL View 2010 (stands for KL U Love) said football always possess the magic to bring all walks of life together.

“Indulging in the game can make us forget about our background, social status, race or economic downturn and just enjoy every moment of the game.

“Dataran Merdeka can accommodate 20,000 people, and DBKL honorably invites all KL residents, tourists and guests to come and join us in celebrating the tournament.”

The host of activities will include an exhibition, mini games, Adidas “free style football” contest, women’s futsal, international food fair and Datuk Bandar’s Trophy tournament will also take place.

The Datuk Bandar’s Trophy highlights the participation of members of all High Commissions and Ambassadors from countries that play in the World Cup. Every team will have three members from the respective embassies to join with other local players.

“Special culture shows representing the world cup teams will also be staged before the matches. This is made possible with the support of the diplomatic community in KL.”

Also present was the High Commissioner of South Africa, broadcast sponsor Astro and YTL communication.

South Africa High Commissioner S Ngombane said the World Cup fever has already swept his host country.

“Yesterday there were 200,000 South African welcomed our team at Johannesburg,”

“I thought South Africans are football-crazy, but I must admit, in this extent, Malaysians are even more enthusiastic than South Africans,” he smiled.

Ahmad Fuad said the audiences can expect a bigger screen to be installed upon semi finals.

“We will have two screens later,” he said.
