Fresh off the success of Mia Sabrina Mahadir’s Saturn Return, Theatresauce is set to captivate audiences once again with their upcoming immersive and participative production, “KAKUREGA,” which will be staged at their headquarters in USJ 21.
Directed by the talented Murasaki Haru, KAKUREGA delves into the anxieties faced by artists as they navigate the pressures of creation. This thought-provoking theatrical experience is the fourth production of Theatresauce’s highly anticipated 2023 season.
KAKUREGA, which translates to “hideout” in Japanese, invites audiences into the world of four characters, each harboring their own objectives and simmering in their personal hideouts. Through introspection, inner conflicts, and self-exploration, these artists aim to reexamine their sense of purpose and find a way forward. Unlike traditional theater, audiences are not mere observers but active participants in these hideouts, engaging and immersing themselves in the experience.
Drawing inspiration from his own struggles as a theater-maker, Murasaki was inspired to create KAKUREGA. He often found himself torn between moments of intense creative expression and complete detachment from the world. Unfortunately, the solace he sought in seclusion often proved to be more destructive than constructive. This conundrum prompted Murasaki to question where artists could turn when they needed an escape. With KAKUREGA, he hopes to shed light on this complex issue.
Innovative theatrical forms and audience participation take center stage
Murasaki sees KAKUREGA as an opportunity to push the boundaries of theatrical forms and redefine the possibilities of audience immersion and participation. The production introduces innovative elements, including the provision of food to the audience, who are also equipped with materials to explore their own creativity during the performance. Combining spoken word, movement, lights, projections, sound, and costumes, the Theatresauce headquarters will be transformed into various spatial dimensions, providing a visually stunning and multi-sensory experience.
KAKUREGA features a talented ensemble comprising Phraveen Arikiah, Shufitri Shukardi, Samuel Tin, and John Wee. The scenography is expertly handled by Bryan Chang from Sans Collective, with stage management by Abner Goh and Jazzie Lee Jin Jye. The production is managed by Chisa Tan. Additionally, alongside KAKUREGA, Howls Theatre Co., led by Murasaki as Artistic Director, is running a supplementary project where visual artists express their own hideouts.
