YSDAF unveils exciting line-up for a remarkable comeback

Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival (YSDAF) will take place on the 19th and 20th of August at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (Klpac)

The eagerly anticipated Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival (YSDAF) is all set for a grand return, unveiling its diverse and captivating festival line-up that promises to captivate audiences from all walks of life. The festival, which will take place on the 19th and 20th of August at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (Klpac), is jam-packed with over 350 arts activities, all free and open to the public.

The two-day extravaganza will kick off at 11:00 am and will feature an array of performances, workshops, and installations, spanning various art forms and genres.

From Malaysia’s top bands setting the stage on fire to delving into the intricate world of a 300-year-old Chinese opera art, YSDAF promises a journey through the senses. One of the highlights is the Visually Impaired Persons (VIPS) Handbell Ensemble’s mesmerizing performance, showcasing the power of music in a unique way. Additionally, a groundbreaking work titled “Deafhood” will shed light on the experiences of deaf individuals living in a predominantly hearing world.

Family Fun and Artistic Exploration

The festival offers a plethora of family-friendly activities that begin at 11:00 am, making it an ideal outing for families. The younger crowd can enjoy a baby theatre called “A Journey of a Baby Butterfly” and Gamelan for Toddlers. Creative youngsters can take part in workshops like “Bird-Making” puppetry and DIY Cardboard Toys, while those interested in performing arts can participate in Speech and Drama workshops.

The Kids Tent will host storytelling sessions, including a captivating live puppetry and interactive theatre work named “Bird Call.” Film enthusiasts can indulge in environmental documentaries in the adjacent Film Tent.

Diverse Offerings and Mainstage Highlights

Inclusivity takes center stage at YSDAF, with offerings like “Mari Main” for NeuroDiverse Children and Physiotherapy and Dance for individuals with Parkinson’s or limited mobility.

The mainstage will feature a fierce competition, “Dance the Scene,” where the audience can vote for their favorite among the Top 16 groups. Music aficionados can look forward to “True Love Waits: A Radiohead Tribute,” a multi-sensory experience celebrating the band’s legacy.

Beyond Tradition and Insta-Worthy Installations

With a theme that bridges the past and the future, YSDAF offers a unique blend of traditional and contemporary performances. Teochew Opera performances and educational activities, as well as workshops on traditional dances and more, will delight attendees.

The festival’s visually stunning installations, including thought-provoking pieces about climate change and community collaboration, offer ample opportunities for Instagram-worthy photos.

YSDAF promotes sustainability by encouraging festival-goers to “Bring Your Own Container, Cutlery, Cup, Carrier, etc.” (BYOC) for discounts and minimal environmental impact. The evening scene promises acoustic and electrifying musical acts, curated by StageReSET and Soundscape Records.

Gala Night

The Gala Night concert, “Unforgettable: Lagenda Malaysia,” is a ticketed event on the 20th of August, featuring iconic Malaysian artistes. Pre-registration for workshops is available on the YSDAF website until 17th August. Attendees are encouraged to use public transport or the provided shuttle service due to limited parking.

YSDAF 2023 is shaping up to be a captivating celebration of art, diversity, and sustainability, beckoning Malaysians to immerse themselves in a weekend of artistic exploration.
