Pentas Seni Merdeka returns for a second season

Pentas Seni Merdeka returns as Think City and KL City Hall unite for season 2, igniting Downtown KL with culture, heritage, and vibrancy.

Think City, a renowned impact organization dedicated to enhancing the livability of cities, has proudly launched the second season of Pentas Seni Merdeka. This monthly public arts initiative, jointly organized with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), has returned to grace the heart of Downtown Kuala Lumpur, aiming to ignite social equity, elevate public spaces, and infuse vibrancy. The initiative aligns with the Kuala Lumpur Creative and Cultural District (KLCCD) Strategic Master Plan, a visionary project collaboratively developed by Think City, DBKL, the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture, the National Heritage Department, and Yayasan Hasanah in 2019.

“I am pleased to see the continuation of Pentas Seni Merdeka in revitalising the city and uplifting our communities through culture and heritage.” expressed YB Dato’ Hajjah Hanifah Hajar Taib, Deputy Minister of Economy, during the launch. In line with the aspirations of the recently launched Malaysia MADANI economic framework, the creative and cultural economic sectors are fundamental in fuelling a vibrant Kuala Lumpur.

The event launch was marked by the presence of notable figures, including YB Dato’ Hajjah Hanifah Hajar Taib, Hamdan Abdul Majeed, Managing Director of Think City, and Izwan Razif Salehapad, Senior Deputy Director of DBKL Culture, Arts, Tourism & Sports Department. Preserving heritage through artistic excellence

The second season of Pentas Seni Merdeka continues to shine a spotlight on master performers of traditional arts, culture, and heritage from Malaysia and the broader region. Curated performances, workshops, and activities are meticulously designed to celebrate and preserve the cultural legacy of Malaysia and its neighboring countries. This year’s program is closely tied to the KLCCD rejuvenation effort, a strategic initiative funded by the Budget 2023, operating under the Ministry of Finance.

“As we accelerate our efforts to develop Downtown KL into a dynamic creative and cultural
district, Pentas Seni Merdeka has emerged as a marquee event for traditional master
performers in Malaysia and the surrounding region. Rooted in Downtown Kuala Lumpur, this
event has created a positive ripple effect throughout the area and the community.” remarked Hamdan Abdul Majeed, Managing Director of Think City. Together with DBKL, we are rejuvenating Downtown KL as part of the activities and activations agreed upon both parties when our third MOU was signed earlier this year.”
