The National Sports Institute (ISN) of Malaysia and DOC2US, a pioneering digital health and e-prescriptions provider, have unveiled an innovative hybrid healthcare support program aimed at enhancing the physical and mental well-being of national athletes. This groundbreaking collaboration, launched in May 2023, combines traditional medical practices with cutting-edge digital health technology to offer comprehensive healthcare services to athletes across the country.
Dr Raymond Choy, CEO & Co-founder of DOC2US, expressed strong support for ISN’s focus on prioritizing the well-being of national athletes. Given the unique challenges athletes face, including intense physical exertion and mental stress, the need for comprehensive healthcare solutions is paramount. This initiative seeks to address issues ranging from physical health concerns common in the sports industry to mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety.
“As part of our drive to contribute to the country and the people, we leverage the many offerings of digital technology in our battle against national health issues to achieve our collective national healthcare goals.”Dr. Choy stated, emphasizing the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, ISN, and TeleHope Health in spearheading this vital initiative.
Addressing unique challenges of national athletes
The hybrid healthcare program, operational since the SEA Games in May 2023, offers a blend of in-person and virtual healthcare services. National athletes gain access to virtual health advisory, teleconsultations, and e-prescriptions at no cost, along with physical home support by approved medical professionals. The mental health component, powered by DOC2US’ mental healthcare platform and TeleHope Health, facilitates access to mental health screening, advisory services, and teleconsultations with licensed psychiatrists and psychologists.
Dr Aw Tsung Wai, Chief Mental Health Officer of TeleHope Health, underscored the prevalence of mental health challenges among young individuals, especially athletes exposed to high-stress environments.
“A hybrid healthcare approach that has a digital element, allows athletes to conveniently access healthcare and encourages them to seek help, easily through a tap on the screen, at home or while they are overseas busy making Malaysians proud.” Dr Tsung Wai noted.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing the collaboration between ISN and DOC2US was witnessed by Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Hannah Yeoh, at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil on August 22, 2023. The initiative aligns with the Ministry’s objectives to address the mental and physical well-being of young athletes, promoting a holistic approach to healthcare.
“This support programme is a key part of our ‘Demi Negara’ spirit and a continuation of what DOC2US has been committed to since the very beginning with our virtual health advisory for those who need it. We are proud to continue contributing to our national vision for Universal Health Coverage, as well as be of service to the underserved.” Dr Choy concluded.
