South Korea’s SK Ecoplant, a prominent player in the energy, construction, and engineering sector, has recently entered into a strategic agreement with Malaysia’s leading integrated waste management company, Cenviro, to implement cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology aimed at optimizing incinerator operations. The collaboration is set to transform waste management practices in Malaysia and reduce environmental impact.
According to a report from The Korean Economic Daily, SK Ecoplant inked the deal on Friday, marking a significant step towards improving waste management and environmental sustainability in Malaysia. Under the terms of the agreement, the AI solution will be deployed at a Cenviro-owned incineration facility located in Seremban, boasting a daily processing capacity of 100 tons.
This development is closely linked to SK Ecoplant’s acquisition of a 30% stake in Cenviro in May of the previous year, demonstrating the commitment of the South Korean conglomerate to enhance Malaysia’s waste management infrastructure.
The core feature of the AI solution involves guiding incinerator operators in determining the optimal timing for waste input, thereby maximizing operational efficiency. To achieve this, approximately 200 data points, including temperature, pressure, and input quantities, are meticulously collected by sensors and measuring instruments installed within the incineration facility. These data are then transformed into approximately 70 crucial data bits and operated within a framework of continuous AI learning.
Environmental benefits
Importantly, the implementation of this innovative solution leads to a significant reduction in pollutant emissions generated during the incineration process, while also curtailing maintenance costs through the early detection of abnormal vibrations or currents via the installed sensors. One key advantage of this technology is its ability to enhance operational efficiency without necessitating the replacement of existing facilities or equipment.
SK Ecoplant is dedicated to expanding its collaboration with Cenviro, with the ultimate goal of applying the AI solution to all incinerator facilities under Cenviro’s ownership. This strategic partnership aligns with the broader mission of reducing Malaysia’s environmental footprint and fostering sustainable waste management practices.
This is not the first international venture for SK Ecoplant, as they previously signed an agreement to provide the AI solution in Vietnam in March. Subsequently, the technology has been successfully applied to an incineration facility in Bac Ninh, a province in northern Vietnam.
The adoption of AI-driven waste management solutions underscores Malaysia’s commitment to embracing technological advancements and fostering a cleaner, more sustainable future for its citizens. As SK Ecoplant progresses with the implementation of this AI solution in Seremban, it is anticipated that similar partnerships will continue to shape the landscape of waste management across the region.
