In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, Japanese and Malaysian musicians are set to take center stage in Malaysia. The much-anticipated musical collaboration features the renowned minyo group MIKAGE PROJECT from Japan and Malaysia’s traditional music sensation, Asmidar. This unique fusion of musical traditions promises to be an exceptional performance that not only entertains but also underscores the role of music in strengthening diplomatic ties between nations.
As the ASEAN-Japan Friendship anniversary approaches, the two-day celebration, scheduled for October 24 and 25, 2023, will take place at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam (UiTM Shah Alam), and PJPAC, 1 Utama, respectively. This event is organized in collaboration with ALIVE Co., Ltd., Medulla Network, The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, and Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam (UiTM Shah Alam), with generous support from Japan Airlines and the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia.
Harmonizing cultural traditions
The collaboration between MIKAGE PROJECT and Asmidar is a testament to the enduring bond between Japan and ASEAN countries, with a particular focus on Malaysia. The magic of this collaboration lies in the fusion of two distinct musical traditions. MIKAGE PROJECT, recognized for their compositions and arrangements of modern renditions of traditional Japanese folk songs, will blend their art with Asmidar’s profound Malaysian traditional sounds. The result is a diverse setlist that beautifully showcases the unique influences and sounds of both artists.
Folk songs are often considered the musical treasures of everyday people, reflecting their daily lives and cultural traditions. In this collaboration, MIKAGE PROJECT’s modern renditions of traditional Japanese folk songs will intertwine with Asmidar’s connection to Malaysian traditions, creating a harmonious blend of sounds that transcend borders. This fusion bridges the gap between the two distinct musical traditions and represents a cultural exchange of immense significance.
Asmidar, whose journey in the music industry began at a young age, brings a rich history of Malaysian cultural traditions to the stage. Her experience in representing Malaysia on international stages and winning several accolades only adds to the depth of this collaboration. It reflects the vibrant cultural diversity of Malaysia and its deep appreciation for traditional music.
Music as a diplomatic tool
This musical collaboration is not only about entertainment; it is also a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy. Music has the ability to transcend language and cultural barriers, creating a shared experience that fosters understanding and friendship. By bringing together musicians from Japan and Malaysia, the collaboration reinforces the diplomatic ties between the two nations and serves as a reminder of the long-standing friendship that has endured for five decades.
Audiences can expect an evening of lively rhythms and melodies, with opportunities to dance and sing along. The fusion of traditional Malaysian sounds and modern Japanese folk music will create an unforgettable experience that not only entertains but also deepens the cultural connections between the two nations.
As a special treat, the concert will premiere on “STAGE BEYOND BORDERS—Selection of Japanese Performances,” an online video project by The Japan Foundation, allowing people worldwide to experience the magic of this collaboration. This online premiere further extends the reach of the concert, promoting cultural exchanges between Malaysia and Japan and contributing to stronger ties between the two countries.
