In a bid to enhance efficiency and security, the bus zone counters and electronic gates (e-gates) at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI), Johor Bahru’s primary customs, immigration, and quarantine complex (CIQ), are set to undergo extensive upgrading works. The initiative, announced by the CIQ communications unit in a Facebook post on Tuesday, is scheduled to commence on Friday, December 15, 2023.
The upgrading project is anticipated to be completed by January 15, 2024, and during this period, several counters and facilities at the departure and arrival areas of the bus zone will be temporarily closed. The CIQ communications unit emphasized that the enhancements aim to streamline processes and improve the overall experience for travellers passing through the checkpoint.
Eligible travellers intending to use the e-gates during this period are required to register their fingerprints at the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) counters on their first visit. Subsequent visits will then enable them to conveniently use the e-gates. Travellers are advised to factor in these closures when planning their journeys, especially considering the expected heavy traffic during Singapore’s school holiday period from November 16 to January 2, as highlighted by Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
The MDAC, introduced in January, is a prerequisite for Singapore passport holders to utilize the e-gates when entering or exiting Malaysia. Additionally, Malaysia’s Immigration Department has announced that, starting December 1, the digital arrival card will be compulsory for all foreign nationals.
Phased upgrading at JB Checkpoint
The upgrading works at the JB checkpoint will be implemented in phases. The departure area will undergo upgrades starting on December 15, with the MDAC counter, three e-gates, and four manual counters closing during the first phase. Subsequent phases, starting on December 21 and December 28, will see additional closures, including six e-gates, eight manual counters, and eventually, ten manual counters.
The arrival area upgrades will commence on December 28, with closures affecting the MDAC counter, three e-gates, and four manual counters during the initial phase. The subsequent phases, beginning on January 3, 2024, and January 9, 2024, will involve further closures, including six e-gates, eight manual counters, and ten manual counters.
The Malaysian customs department has urged travellers to plan their trips carefully during this period and has apologized for any inconvenience caused by the necessary upgrades. Regular updates and information regarding the upgrading works will be shared through official channels to keep the public informed.
