Kwai Chai Hong unveils Mahjong-inspired installation

Kwai Chai Hong, the iconic heritage laneway in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, is set to welcome the Chinese New Year with an enchanting installation titled “Rise of the Dragon” This dynamic celebration, centered around the Year of the Dragon, pays homage to the rich history of Mahjong, an ancient game dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

The thematic concept of this year’s installation revolves around the cultural significance of Mahjong, highlighting its role beyond a mere game for the Chinese community. Zeen Chang, Managing Partner of Bai Chuan Management, expressed, “Mahjong is known as Chinese people’s favourite pastime, and its symbolism extends beyond our diverse Malaysian community, fostering values of leisure, bonding, and cognitive improvement.”

Collaborating with local artists Wong Jia Min and Lee Chaer Shean from plus + plus, renowned for their creative contributions in architecture, the duo presents the centerpiece—a Mahjong game set in the heart of the cul-de-sac, surrounded by the silhouette of a dragon traversing above.

Rise of the Dragon

The inspiration for the installation comes from the dynamic movement of reshuffling Mahjong tiles, symbolizing a fresh beginning in alignment with the essence of Chinese New Year. Wong explained that Mahjong, played in rounds with reshuffling, mirrors the act of resetting the year, symbolizing prosperity, union, harmony, and peace for the new year.

“The Mahjong panels and wire mesh collectively craft the silhouette of a Dragon, awakening from its long slumber as winter ends and soaring the skies, representing hope for a better and more prosperous beginning in the Year of the Dragon,” Lee added.

Chang emphasized that the “Rise of the Dragon” installation aptly represents the beast that has gathered enough strength to take on the new year with renewed vitality and power.

“Just like how each Mahjong game is played, the start of the game is where both our hands are mixing the tiles in fluid circular motions and rhythms, like the ascension of the Dragon’s spirit slithering awake from its slumber,” Chang remarked.

Kwai Chai Hong will be open to the public daily from 9 AM to 12 AM. The “Rise of the Dragon” installation will be available for viewing from January 25, 2024, to March 3, 2024.
