In a dazzling display of talent and innovation, two teams from the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) emerged victorious at the prestigious PMIMY Hackathon 2023, organized by the Project Management Institute, Malaysia Chapter (PMIMY).
Team CTL, comprised of Chan See Mun, Teo Zee Xuan, and Lee Pei Qi, students from the BSc (Hons) in Computer Science with a specialization in Data Analytics, Level 3 Sem 2, clinched the top spot at the hackathon. The award ceremony, held during the PMIMY Annual Dinner 2023 on December 9 at Sheraton Hotel in Puchong, saw the team being presented with the grand prize by Mr Adam Tan, Director of Technology & Cybersecurity, and Mr Lai Jun Sing, Director-at-Large, Treasury & Procurement of PMIMY.
Under the mentorship of Assoc Prof Dr Nirase Fathima Abubacker from the School of Computing at APU, Team CTL’s winning project focused on creating Functional Reports and Dashboards for PMIMY Marcom, with a specific emphasis on PMI member analysis and social media analytics. The team’s exceptional performance earned them a cash prize of RM3,000.
Chan See Mun, Team CTL Lead, expressed her gratitude, acknowledging the prestige of winning an event organized by PMIMY. “It’s an honor to be the winner of this competition,” she stated. Chan See Mun highlighted the challenges they faced in obtaining social media data for the pilot study but emphasized how their solution exceeded expectations.
Assoc Prof Dr Nirase Fathima praised Team CTL, saying, “Winning first place proves Team CTL’s ability to handle current issues and provide practical solutions, showcasing their knowledge and skills. I’m proud of our students and delighted to bring glory to APU.”
Journey to Success
Reflecting on their journey, Chan See Mun emphasized the significance of classroom knowledge and skills in overcoming challenges. “Our true victories lie in the insights gained, skills acquired, and the enduring bonds of teamwork and friendship woven throughout,” she added.
Meanwhile, Team KTK, consisting of Lim Khai Xuan (Team Lead), Tan Chang Yang Terence, and Khaw Khai Nee, Level 2 Sem 1 Data Analytics students from APU, secured the second position. Their insightful analysis of PMIMY’s social media accounts during the pitch earned them the 1st runner-up position and a cash prize of RM2,000.
Lim Khai Xuan, reflecting on their journey, stated, “Since it was our group’s first time representing our university in competition, we faced many challenges in the process but through unwavering determination and resilience, we emerged victorious in the competition.”
The PMIMY Hackathon 2023 not only showcased the technical prowess of these talented teams but also highlighted the spirit of innovation and collaboration fostered at APU. The success of Team CTL and Team KTK serves as an inspiration for aspiring data enthusiasts, marking a significant milestone in their academic and professional growth. The achievements of both teams underscore APU’s commitment to nurturing skilled professionals in the field of data analytics.
