The much-anticipated transformation of the Merdeka Roundabout in the heart of Labuan town has finally been unveiled to the public. The grand opening took place on February 1, coinciding with the Federal Territory Day celebration, during which the iconic roundabout was adorned with a spectacular display of colorful lights.
The project, initiated on February 6th, has transformed the Merdeka Roundabout into a groundbreaking landmark for the Federal Territory of Labuan. Going beyond mere symbolism, the upgraded roundabout embraces a ‘Contemporary Modern’ maritime concept, ushering in a new era for Labuan. This visionary design not only establishes the roundabout as a symbol of progress but also positions Labuan as a smart city, poised to allure tourists globally
The distinctive features of the roundabout include four coral-shaped structures illuminated with vibrant neon lights and surrounded by a water fountain that depicts the uniqueness and beauty of marine life. This design perfectly aligns with Labuan’s identity as a maritime city.
The ‘Pearl of Borneo’ Globe
At the center of the roundabout stands a ‘globe’ structure, serving as a symbolic representation of Labuan’s island identity. This architectural centerpiece not only captures the essence of Labuan as an island but also pays homage to its renowned title as the ‘Pearl of Borneo.’
The official unveiling of the new face of Merdeka Roundabout to the public was conducted by Rithuan Mohd Ismail, the Chief Executive Officer of the Labuan Corporation, in a ceremony held last night. The event was attended by Deputy Chairman of the Labuan Corporation, Simsudin Sidek, along with several department heads of the Labuan Corporation and local media practitioners.
Speaking to the media, Rithuan highlighted that the redevelopment of the Merdeka Roundabout is part of Labuan Corporation’s ongoing efforts to enhance Labuan’s appeal as a captivating tourist destination.
It’s worth noting that the Merdeka Roundabout, originally erected in the 1970s, has undergone three major redesigns prior to the latest upgrading. Its most recent transformation took place in the 1990s, introducing a thematic focus on ephemeral nature and flora.
The completion of the Merdeka Roundabout’s transformation not only marks a new chapter for Labuan but solidifies its position as an attractive and modern maritime city, poised to draw in visitors with its unique blend of contemporary design and maritime heritage.
