Centuries-old ceremony honours legacy of Tua Pek Kong

The annual flame-fanning ceremony held at the Thai Pak Khoong (Hai Choo Soo) temple in Penang, has predicted good economic growth for the first four months of 2024.

This centuries-old tradition, organised by the Poh Hock Seah temple, draws devotees and spectators seeking insights into the year’s economic prospects.

The ceremony and its history

Held on February 23rd, 2024, coinciding with the 14th day of the Lunar New Year, the ceremony involves observing the rising tide and interpreting the height and intensity of flames lit in an urn.

“We wait for the first wave to cover the stone before starting,” explained Ewe Chee Way, a committee member from Poh Hock Seah temple.

“Then, the master leads the ceremony, lighting the fire and announcing the predictions.”

This year, the flames indicated “Good,” “Average,” and “Average” economic growth for the three subsequent four-month periods, based on the lunar calendar.

A blend of tradition and faith

Beyond economic predictions, the ceremony holds deep cultural and religious significance.

Amidst a festive atmosphere, devotees gathered to pay their respects, light joss sticks, and seek blessings for prosperity, good fortune, and protection.

This event serves as a unique blend of cultural tradition and spiritual practice for the local community.

In the days leading up to the ceremony, the statue of the revered deity Tua Pek Kong and the urn are transported from the Poh Hock Seah temple in Armenian Street to the Thai Pak Khoong temple.

After the ceremony concludes around 5 am, both are returned to their original location.

Tua Pek Kong, believed to be a benevolent merchant who arrived in Penang around 1700, is a significant figure in Malaysian Taoism.

His tomb, along with his brother’s, lies beside the Thai Pak Khoong temple, serving as a constant reminder of his legacy.
