Tetra Pak recognized for environmental leadership

Tetra Pak achieves ‘A List’ recognition for 8th year, leading in corporate transparency, climate action, and water security.

Tetra Pak has once again demonstrated its commitment to corporate transparency and environmental responsibility by securing a coveted spot on the annual ‘A List’ released by the global environmental non-profit organization, CDP. The company’s outstanding performance in disclosing data related to forests, climate change, and water security through CDP’s 2023 Forests questionnaires has placed Tetra Pak among the top 2% of over 21,000 companies assessed globally.

Tetra Pak is not only a leader in corporate transparency but has also become the sole representative from the carton packaging sector in the CDP leadership band, having received an impressive ‘A-‘ score on both climate change and water security. The recognition is particularly significant considering the growing concern over the deteriorating state of nature globally, largely attributed to human activities, as highlighted by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

Tetra Pak’s commitment to nature action

The IPBES warns that global food systems are a major contributor to nature loss, despite their reliance on the essential services provided by nature. It is estimated that over half of the world’s total GDP, amounting to $44 trillion, is moderately or highly dependent on nature and its services. Recognizing the urgency to address and reverse this alarming trend, Tetra Pak has committed to taking action for nature, aligning with the targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Gilles Tisserand, Vice President Climate & Biodiversity at Tetra Pak, emphasized the need for urgent action, stating, “Our approach to nature is closely linked with our ambitions on climate, circularity, social sustainability, and food systems. Delivering on this requires certain enabling factors across the business, including people and processes, for example, capacity development, monitoring, reporting, and disclosure.”

Tetra Pak’s inclusion in the CDP Forests A List for the eighth consecutive year reinforces the company’s dedication to transparency and sustainability across various aspects of its operations. The company’s Vice President acknowledged the importance of corporate transparency, stating, “As we strive to lead the way in corporate transparency, we are extremely pleased to be included in the CDP Forests A List for the eighth year running, as well as to be the only company in the carton packaging sector who is in this year’s leadership band across all the CDP areas of disclosure.”

Sherry Madera, CEO of CDP, congratulated Tetra Pak and other companies on the A List, highlighting the crucial role of environmental transparency. Madera emphasized that earning a place on the A List is about more than just the score; it signifies high-quality and comprehensive data that enables companies to have a holistic view of their environmental impact.

Assessing environmental leadership

CDP utilizes a detailed and independent methodology to assess companies, allocating scores from A to D- based on disclosure comprehensiveness, awareness, and management of environmental risks, and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership. Companies that do not disclose or provide insufficient information receive an F grade. The scoring for forests is conducted through the lens of four commodities: timber, cattle products, soy, and palm oil.

As environmental concerns continue to escalate globally, Tetra Pak’s consistent presence on the CDP A List exemplifies the company’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sets a benchmark for others in the industry to follow. The full list of companies that made this year’s CDP A List can be found on CDP’s official website.
