European Islamic Thinkers urge Malaysia to lead efforts against Islamophobia

Anwar discusses Malaysia’s role in combating Islamophobia with European scholars. UN urges global solidarity on International Day against Islamophobia.

In a bid to counter the rising tide of Islamophobia across Europe, Islamic thinkers and scholars have called upon Malaysia to spearhead effective strategies combating the discrimination and prejudice faced by Muslims.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that this proposition surfaced during his recent meeting with prominent figures from the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), the Arab World Institute, and the Middle East and Mediterranean Research Centre (CERMOM) in Berlin, Germany, on Monday.

Anwar, who is currently on a six-day official visit to Germany starting from March 11, shared insights from his discussions with European Islamic intellectuals. The talks, he disclosed in a Facebook post, delved into various pressing issues, prominently addressing the escalating challenge of Islamophobia in the West.

“I used my free time in Berlin to discuss and exchange views with my fellow thinkers and scholars in Europe.” Anwar expressed in a Facebook post.

“Our discussions touched on several issues, including the role of scholars and new challenges arising from rampant Islamophobia in Europe today,” Anwar elaborated.

The Prime Minister underscored that the meeting also focused on formulating concrete steps to combat Islamophobia, particularly within Western contexts. “Insya-Allah, my friends and I will continue to be the main drivers in combating Islamophobia,” Anwar affirmed.

UN Secretary-General’s urgent plea

The call for Malaysia to assume a leadership role in combating Islamophobia aligns with the global momentum to address anti-Muslim sentiments. On the occasion of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia observed on March 15, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a poignant message, urging concerted action against the pernicious spread of anti-Muslim bigotry.

In his address, Guterres highlighted the significant contributions of Muslims throughout history, emphasizing their integral role in shaping culture, scholarship, and scientific advancement across civilizations. He lamented the emergence of Islamophobia as a destructive force, perpetuating discrimination, exclusion, and violence against Muslim communities worldwide.

Guterres called upon political, religious, and community leaders to unite in condemning Islamophobia and fostering social cohesion. He emphasized the imperative for governments to safeguard religious freedom, combat hate speech, and promote interfaith dialogue. The Secretary-General also underscored the pivotal role of digital platforms in moderating harmful content and fostering inclusivity.

As Malaysia contemplates its pivotal role in the global fight against Islamophobia, the nation stands poised to champion inclusivity, tolerance, and mutual respect, echoing the spirit of solidarity advocated by the UN and the collective aspirations of Muslims worldwide during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
