Big Nose Productions proudly announces the upcoming staging of “Leela Jhansi,” an original play by acclaimed playwright Fa Abdul. Scheduled to enthrall audiences from May 3rd to 5th, 2024, at Auditorium A, Level 5, Komtar, Penang, this production promises to delve into the complexities of a stolen childhood and the ethical quandaries surrounding child marriage.
“Leela Jhansi” unfolds the poignant narrative of a stolen childhood, where aspirations collide with harsh realities in the heart of a remote village. Thirteen-year-old Leela, a spirited girl with dreams as vast as the open skies above her, yearns for education and a promising future. However, her innocent dreams are shattered when the wealthiest man in the village proposes marriage, not out of love, but as a transaction for his own gain.
Caught in the crossfire of familial obligation and societal pressure, Leela’s father grapples with a moral dilemma. On one hand, he sees an opportunity to lift his family from poverty, securing a life of comfort through this alliance. On the other hand, he faces the stark reality of sacrificing his daughter’s childhood and autonomy.
As anticipation mounts in the village, Leela becomes a pawn in a game of social status and financial gain. Despite her tender age, she confronts questions of agency and the rights of a child. “Leela Jhansi” challenges conventional notions of morality and tradition, urging audiences to confront uncomfortable truths beneath seemingly innocent customs.
